PHIL Armstrong blasted a double century for Workington thirds on Sunday – playing his first game of the season!
He has just returned from college and hit an unbeaten 202 in a Workington total of 307-6 against Whitehaven. Remarkably Phil hasn't been playing at college, and has just had a couple of knocks for a West Cumbria Midweek team.
Armstrong scored the runs to take him over the 200 mark in the final over of the Workington innings, having batted throughout the 40 overs.
Whitehaven nearly salvaged a draw but four late wickets from Scott Auty (4-8) ensured that Workington took maximum points as the home side were bowled-out for 102. Alex Cavaghan top-scored with 37
Elsewhere, a knock of 64 and two wickets from Glen Riley, helped Cleator thirds to a six wicket win over an improving Gosforth side, whose own innings of 161-6 included useful knocks from Johnny Hoult (33no), Michael Dickinson (27no) and Alan Gribbin (27).
Jamie Martin scored 31 not out for Cleator with Alan Kirkham taking 2-33 for Gosforth.
In another high scoring affair, Egremont’s Alan Parker and British Steel’s Liam Ryan both fell one short of a half century. The score of 49 was 14-year-old Ryan’s total in senior cricket.
Steels went onto win by three wickets with only a few balls remaining, with captain Neil Carruthers (32no) and Ryan Clubley (12no) steering the visitors home in a thrilling climax to the game.
Egremonts’ Ben Jacques was unlucky to finish on the losing side having scored a brisk 28 and bowled a very economical spell of 3 for 11. Ronnie Looney hit 29 for Egremont when they were bowled-out for 175 and Jake Daniel made 21 in Steels’ winning response of 176-7.
Clubley (4-23), Jack Burgess (2-18) and Matthew Lowden (2-18) shared the bowling honours for Steel while Ryan Byrne took 2-23 for Egremont.
Fixtures: Saturday - British Steels v Gosforth. Sunday - Workington III v Cleator III and Egremont II v Whitehaven III.
