Monday, 08 September 2008

Despite the miserable week-end there was some cricket played on Sunday at Seascale where the home team retained the annual Three's Company Trophy.

Seascale, Calderbridge and Gosforth take turns hosting the competition which now takes the form of a round robin of twenty 20 games.

Calderbridge won the first game against Gosforth after posting 146-1 with Dave Stubbings (30), Ian Van Maurik (33) and Peter Lancaster (35) all retiring.

Alan Kirkham (1-6) took the only wicket to fall and in reply Gosforth made 99-8 with skipper Alan Gribbin scoring 33 retired and Dave Stubbings taking 2-3.

Seascale then beat Gosforth in the second game. They too batted first and scored 129-6 in their 20 overs, with Daniel Lee (30) and Lee Fleet (33) both retiring.

Gosforth were then dismissed for 107. Johnny Hoult hit four straight sixes in his 30 retired. Seascale's skipper Steve Brown senior took 3-9, which included the first ever hat-trick taken in the 36 years of the competition.

In the deciding game Seascale again batted first and posted 117-7 with Steve Brown junior making 30 retired and Andy Lee hitting an invaluable 24 not out from just ten balls.

Stubbings again did best with the ball for Calderbridge taking 3-11 from his three overs.

In reply Calderbridge were always behind the run rate but some late hitting from Stubbings (30 ret), Ian Van Maurik (30 ret) and Mark Hartley (20) brought them close.

Needing 16 to win from the last two overs it could have gone either way but Fleet then took two wickets in the 19th over to effectively win the game.

Calderbridge eventually finished six runs short on 111-5.

With the cricket as ever played in the best possible spirit, all three teams will be looking forward to next year's competition to be played at Calderbridge.
