Penrith Gold Under-15's got the better of closest league rivals Wigton by the narrowest of margins on Friday.
Batting first Penrith made 129-8 with retirements for Nicholson, Birtle and Atkinson. Retirements from Richard Sowerby and Nicky Watt took Wigton to a point where they required nine runs from three overs.
However, tight Penrith bowling saw the visitors home by just three runs.
There was an even closer finish at Threlkeld in one of the Under-13 Strollers Ten10 Cup matches when the home side and Stainton finished absolutely level on 91 runs and three wickets down.
Stainton, however, had reached the highest score at the nine over mark and as such ran out winners.
Workington eventually progressed from this venue with wins over both Threlkeld and Stainton, posting the day’s highest total of 115 from ten overs in the process.
Three high scoring ties at Keswick resulted in Penrith Gold qualifying for the next round although Cockermouth Green may yet also qualify as the highest runner up, posting scores of 92 and 87 in the process - scores that would have been good enough to win most matches.
Great Corby, who won the Division One League title a couple of weeks ago, sprung a slight surprise as they defeated Premier League side Wigton to move into the next round.
Ben Purdham scored an undefeated 55 in their two games as he maintained his impressive form for the season.
Retirements for Jack Hunter (Workington Blue) and Angus Carruthers (Cockermouth Gold) helped to see their respective teams through but a couple of venues will have to restage their ties as rain prevented play.
Pick of this coming weekend’s Under-15 games sees Workington face Cleator as both look to challenge Seascale for the Western title and a likely meeting with Penrith Gold in the overall league final.
