An Under-15’s County Cup semi-final played on a green wicket contrived to produce a low-scoring thriller that went to the very last ball.
Cockermouth won the toss and not surprisingly, given the wicket, elected to make Workington bat.
The visitors soon lost Jake Daniel to an indifferent shot; Liam Ryan caught behind off a misdirected pull shot and then captain Jonny Irving bowled by Alex Grainger to a ball that moved significantly.
Andrew Ireland (18) and Jack Whinn then progressed the score on from 14-3 to 38-3 before Jack Edmonson struck with four wickets in nine balls as the score slumped to 43-8.
Andrew Shilito (13) and Jack Burgess did well to take the score up to 64-9 over the final eight overs.
Cockermouth would have been confident about knocking off such a low total in 20 overs but the wicket was still offering plenty for any bowlers who put the ball on the spot.
Alex McGeen took three wickets in his four over spell and with Andrew Ireland taking the important wicket of Grainger then Cockermouth found themselves in trouble at 25-4.
A run out and a caught and bowled by Irving saw two further wickets fall at 33 before Angus Carruthers and Regan Tinnion dug in against accurate bowling from Irving (1 for 4 from 4 overs) and Shilito.
With four overs remaining and Carruthers/Tinnion still at the crease, the home side needed 19 to win.
Two tight overs from Ryan Clubley left seven required from the final Matthew Steele over. The pressure finally told as first Caruthers (26) and then Jamie Ward skied shots, in pursuit of runs, and were well caught leaving Tinnion needing to hit a four from the final ball.
He could only manage a single leaving Cockermouth two runs short.
In the other semi-final Penrith Gold 188-0 (Arron Pamphilon 50 ret, Joe McKinley 51 ret, Callum Burton 51 ret, Scott Lancaster 22no) easily beat Penrith Green 79 all out (Alistair Craig 39).
The two Under-13 County Cup semi finals were also played when there was more joy for Penrith Gold and yet more disappointment for Cockermouth.
Penrith Gold reached 133-6 (Greg Hall 31ret, Richard Sykes 34ret, Tom Coulthard 4-14) and then bowled-out Carlisle Blue for 52 (Richard Sykes 4-10).
Cockermouth were chasing a Carlisle Green score of 117-7 and could only manage 94-9.
In the Under-15 League Carlisle Green made 103-5 (P Richardson 30 ret, J Oultram 21 K Hull 22) after Appleby had opened with 127-9 (C Kirkpatrick 31 ret, C Allinson 19)
It was a close fought match with both teams not giving much away but Appleby bowlers had a very good middle innings spell keeping Carlisle in check
In the other games Penrith Green 109-7 (J Cowperthwaite 30ret, G Burne 24 no, R Martin 22 L Watson 2-11, R Collin 2-11, Z Sinkinson 2-18) v Nunwick Gold 108-7 (R Mounsey 32ret, M Robinson 32ret R Martin 2-12, R Jackson 2-12)
Wigton 131-4 (M Hill 33 ret N Watt 35 ret M Slack 2-19) v Carlisle Blue 92ao (M Slack 30 ret, N Watt 3-23 E Armstrong 3-16 )

Cleator 112-7 v Keswick 105-4
Joe Riley top scored for Cleator with a big hitting 30 ret and Danny Hodgson, batting at number 8 scored a much needed 24no. N.Hurton returned 3-20 for Keswick. Sam, Sharpe and Robbie Bland 22 & 27 respectively got Keswick off to a good start followed by Matthew Clark with 21. A great game of junior cricket saw Keswick needing 11 to win off the last over but falling short by 7
Cockermouth 158-7 (Jack Spiers 33 ret, Peter Wilson 30ret, Thomas Elliot 30ret) v Seascale 73-6 (T king 32ret)
Thomas Elliot, batting at number 11 hit a remarkable 30 in just 11 balls - one of the fastest retirements recorded in the league.
Egremont 90ao (L Cruden 16 H Page 18) v Whitehaven 96-5 (Will Benson 31 ret, Kyle Henderson 18, D Burrow 2-6)
A very exciting game saw Egremont come within 6 runs of chasing down a competitive total of 96 set by Whitehaven. Whitehaven innings started well with opener Kyle Henderson scoring 18 but the real impetus came from Will Benson who retired for an excellent 31.
Egremont most successful bowler was Daniel Burrows with 2 wkts for 6 runs in his 2 overs. Egremont set about the chase with purpose and all batsmen got in and the most telling contributions came from Howard Page (18) and Lee Cruden (16) but they eventually ran out of overs. Whitehaven's fielding was the key difference and it resulted in getting 4 key run outs.
Lanercost 63-8 (J Dixon 23, M Wetherell 1-7) v Caldbeck 64-7 (S Pattinson 17, J Crabtree 3-12)

Workington Blue 74ao (Lewis Hull 16 Matthew McGarry 13 Matthew Fowler 2-13) v Workington 114-3 (Daniel Robson 30 ret, Jack Richardson 18 not out, Oliver Wilson 17 not out Liam Armstrong 2-12)
There was a keenly contested game between Workington & Workington Blue. Workington Blue siezed the early initiative restricting Workington to 20-3 off 4 overs, but an excellent partnership of 60 between Daniel Robson (30 ret) & Oliver Wilson (17 not out), gave Workington the advantage, eventually finishing on 114 - 4.
Liam Armstrong was the pick of the bowling, with 4-0-12-2. In response Matthew McGarry got the Blue innings off to a good start, with a succession of quick boundaries, but some accurate bowling by Workington helped keep their response in check, Workington Blue eventually finishing all out for 74. Pick of the bowlers was Matthew Fowler 4-0-13-2
