Cumbria County Under-17’s completed their ECB County Championship programme with an excellent performance against Cambridgeshire at Penrith.

Cambridgeshire were outplayed in all departments of the game by a very positive Cumbria side.

Cumbria skipper Alex Atkinson won the toss and elected to bat who appeared to be heading for a large total when they had reached 150-2 off 47 overs.

However the remaining eight wickets only added another 100 runs with the innings closing in the 92nd over for 250.

The best contributions came from Will Chapples (Furness) and John Huck (Netherfield) both scoring 39, while captain Atkinson (Netherfield) continued his good run of form with 61 (including nine fours).

The batsmen were of the opinion that runs would be hard to come by as the wicket lacked pace and bounce and this proved to be the case when Cambridgeshire batted as they closed the first day on 18-3.

This continued to be the trend at the start of the second day with Cambridgeshire eventually being bowled out for 87 in the 52nd over.

Dan McDermott (Workington) was the spearhead of the attack with figures of 14.3-7-23-4 and together with Ryan Tyson (Kirkby) 10-4-12-2 caused the opposition many problems. They were ably supported by Jack White (Kendal) 9-4-10-2 and Ed Waind (Lindal Moor) 9-3-8-2.

Cumbria did not enforce the follow on and set about adding quick runs to make a declaration and outstanding batting by Atkinson and Huck enabled Cumbria to declare after only 19 overs having score 157-4.

Atkinson made 69 not out (including four sixes and four fours) with his 50 coming up in 33 balls. Huck’s 39 included five fours and one six. They both hit huge sixes over the adjacent school building.

Cambridgeshire were asked to score 321 in a minimum of 42 overs and having reached 53-1 off 13 overs the team managers agreed to call an end to proceedings.

Cumbria took 19 points from the game and Cambridgeshire went home with five.
