After successful indoor winter net sessions Cumbria Under-17’s played their first warm-up match on Sunday before the commencement of the ECB County U-17 Championship.
Hosts Sedbergh School 1st XI won the toss and elected to bat reaching 201-6 from their 40 overs.
Main contributors were Will Chapples 53, retired who has elected to play for Lancashire U-17’s this coming season and Sam Dutton 57, who will be playing for Cumbria U-17’s in the County Championship.
Cumbria used eight bowlers, each bowling five overs and the wicket takers were Rhys Studt (Barrow) 2-27, NIck Watt (Wigton) 1-10 and the captain Nick Birtle (Penrith) 1-23.
The U-17’s never looked like achieving the target set but there were useful performances from opener Lewis Gribbin (Duddon) 61, including eight fours, Bradley Chapples (Dalton) 26 no and George Birtle (Penrith) 24. The match ended drawn when Cumbria U-17s had reached 145-7.
The remaining warm up fixtures are v XL Club at Keswick CC on Thursday 27 May when the remaining members in the winter squad will be selected and v MCC at Netherfield CC on Friday 4 June.
The ECB programme has 2 day matches against Scotland on Thursday/Friday 15/16 July at Sedbergh School; Herefordshire on Tuesday/Wednesday 20/21 July at Sedbergh School; Leicestershire on Tuesday/Wednesday 3/4 August at Netherfield CC and Northumberland on Tuesday/Wednesday 10/11 August at South Northumberland CC.
The U-17’s will also be involved in a new one day cup competition and will play Herefordshire on Friday 23 July at Sedbergh School; Leicestershire on Thursday, 5 August at Warton CC and Northumberland on Monday, 9 August at Benwell Hill CC.
