Cumbria Under-17’s took a much depleted team to Wellington CC to play Shropshire in a game which finished in a rain-affected draw.
Very late cry offs through injury and other commitments necessitated a number of changes from the team victorious against Herefordshire and Northumberland.
Cumbria won the toss and asked Shropshire to bat on a damp wicket with play not commencing until 11.45pm and through a number of stoppages due to rain, play did not end until 7.45pm.
Shropshire found scoring difficult against an accurate pace attack and closed the day at 216-9. Their innings closed the next morning at 234 off 90.4 overs with excellent bowling again by both Dan McDermott (Workington) 21.4-8-32-3 and Alex Atkinson (Nethefield) 16-7-28-3.
The Shropshire total should have been well within Cumbria's capabilities but they only had an outstanding innings by Atkinson with 107 (including 9 fours, 3 sixes) off 139 balls in a disappointing total of 203 all out.
A major turning point in the innings was when Liam Livingstone (Barrow) was adjudged to be lbw when on 20 after a quick-fire stand of 43 with Atkinson.
Shropshire’s second innings followed a similar pattern to their first ending on 110-5 off 27 overs.
The frustrating outcome was that match points were Shropshire 7 and Cumbria 8 but Shropshire gain a further 10 points as Cumbria could not reach their first innings total.
Cumbria’s final match is against an as yet unknown southern county to be played at Penrith CC.
