WhitehavenU11_2008.Two County Cup (Northern) Finals were played last week with Penrith Gold (Under 15) and Carlisle Green (Under 13) running out winners.

They now wait to see who they face from the South of the County in the overall County Final, the winners of that going forward into the National Competition.

The same two clubs won the corresponding titles in 2008 and indeed Penrith Gold also won the Under 15 event in 2007 to make it three on the bounce.

After many rained off attempts, there was finally a successful conclusion to last year’s Under 11 League Cup final with Whitehaven (pictured) claiming their first Junior title since 1999.

Starting with the Under-11’s Cup final where Whitehaven Blue came out worthy winners against last year’s Under 11 League Champions, Carlisle Green.

This was Whitehaven’s first Junior title since 1999 and reflects the hard work put in by the players and coaching staff.

Whitehaven set a reasonable total of 101-4 with Jacob Carton top scoring with 30 retired.

Dean Henderson made 15 along with Will Benson while Paul McNally (10) was the other batsman in double figures. Ben Davidson with 1-12 was Carlisle’s most productive bowler.

The Whitehaven bowlers then defended the total superbly with some very accurate bowling from all of their attack, notably Jack McNicholas (3-9), Jake Bawden (3-15) and Shannon Rumney (2-8).

Carlisle Green were eventually bowled out for 60 with Bern Gregg (14) and Harry Grant (11) top-scoring.

The fielding was outstanding from both teams who contested the final in front of a good crowd on a lovely summer’s evening at Keswick.

In the Under 15 County Cup Final Penrith Gold batted first and were all out for 91 on the final ball of the 20th over. Several batsmen made starts but no one progressed to a big score. Scott Lancaster (19) and Joe McKinley (16) top scored whilst for Workington Ryan Clubley (4 overs, 3 for 6) and Matthew Steel (4 overs, 3 for 17) returned the best bowling figures.

Penrith then struck early removing both Workington openers with the score still in single figures.

They say 'Catches win Matches' and so it proved as first Joe McKinley took a good catch on the boundary to dismiss Jonny Irving and then keeper Arron Pamphilon took a superb one handed catch to remove key batsman Andrew Ireland (19).

Pamphilon rounded off a good day with a further catch and a stumping.

Workington were never allowed to recover by tight Penrith bowling and finished 17 runs short on 74 for 6 with Jack Whinn 18 not out at the close.

Lancaster (2 for 13) and Liam Pickering (also 2 for 13) exemplified the performance put in by all the Penrith bowlers.

In the Under 13 County Cup Final Carlisle Green 67-7 (M Hawley 15,  D Gommersall 13 and H Grant 12, S Cherry  3 for 8) beat Penrith Gold 66ao (S Cherry 17, D Pickthall 16, B Connan 3 for 8, M Hawley 2 for 5 and H Dhalech 2 for 8)

Matches in the Under 15 League Cup saw Lanercost concede to Workington after being unable to travel to west Cumbria.

Keswick (339) beat Workington Blue (264) after an opening partnership of 49 between Ben Sharpe (18) and A. Hickey (37) gave Keswick a lightening start.

With solid batting throughout they proceeded to set a useful total. Harry Garner, who made 23, rounded off a solid performance with bat and ball by taking four wickets in Workington Blues' reply in which Jack Williamson (25) and Jack Burgess (12) starred with the bat.

ention also to under 11 Keswick player Charlie Robson who bowled three excellent overs taking 2 for 11. It was a very enjoyable game played in an excellent spirit between the two teams.

Workington Blue 264 (Jack Burgess 12, Jack Williamson 25, Harry Garner 4-21, A Hickey 3-23) v Keswick 339 (A Hickey 37, Ben Sharpe 18, Harry Garner 23, S Ligertwood 17, Sean Simpson 2-12, Nathan Graham 2-36)

Cleator 323 v Penrith Gold 323 (Penrith win on fewer wickets lost).

Whitehaven 328 (Cameron Connor 25, Jack Watson 25, Tom Sarrington 21, Matthew Sempill 4-17) v Egremont 283 (Ade Mellen 34, Matthew Lancaster 16, Matthew Sempill 11, J Lofthouse 3-10)

A young Egremont team batted first and were restricted by some tight bowling, particularly by Jamie Lofthouse (3-10).

Ade Mellen provided the main threat with 34 runs from 16 balls, as Egremont made 283. Whitehaven got off to a flying start with 57 runs coming off the first 6 overs, major contributions coming from Cameron Connor and Jack Watson, both with 25.

Their progress was halted dramatically with a spell of 4-17 from 11-year-old Matthew Sempill, before later batsmen Tom Sarrington and Rob Fisher provided some big shots to see Whitehaven safely home

Workington batted first and had advanced by 11 after 12 overs with Neil Little picking up three wickets and team-mates Swann, Clark and Reeves two apiece.

But Wilson and Cape as the fourth pair began a recovery before Daniel Robson and J Steele as the final pair added an impressive 43 in their four overs. Great Corby struggled early on against some tight bowling and well set fields.

They were still only four behind the visitors’ score at the 11 over mark before J Steele took three wickets in four balls in a decisive over.

Despite Astle and Israel adding 18 in the final partnership the home side finished over 50 adrift.

Workington scored only five more  off the bat, but extras and wickets made the difference. In a very sporting gesture a Workington fielder corrected an umpire who had signalled a four to signal a six to the batting team
