workingtonu13_countycup1.jpgWorkington have reached the Northern Regional Final of the ECB Under 13 Club Championship after covering over 500 miles in two days to secure wins over Millom and Arbroath.

On Saturday the Workington youngsters posted a massive 160 for 3 with contributions from Daniel Robson (32 retired), Liam Armstrong (30 retired), Callum Sutton (28), Grant Reid (22) and Oliver Wilson (19).

In reply, Millom were never able to recover after losing early wickets, closing on 79 for 9 (Joe Jordan 22) with Man of the Match Robson claiming 3 for 14 as Workington secured the County Cup for the very first time at this age bracket.

Under 24 hours later the team were on their way to meet Scottish Champions Arbroath who were superb hosts to the Cumbrian side and the many parents who made the trip north.

Workington were put in to bat and again made a lightening start thanks to Callum Sutton (26) and Daniel Robson (31 retired). Having reached 74 for 2 in the eleventh over a score of 140 plus looked on the cards.

However, Arbroath’s bowlers, notably Ryan Cameron (2-5) and Scott Fleming (3-5), gained the initiative as Workington closed on 101 for 9 setting up a tense second half to the game.

After 10 overs Arbroath had reached 48 for 1 with Gordon Porter having retired on 30 and brother Will Porter set for a decent innings.

The turning point came in the 16th over with Arbroath on 72 for 3. A stunning catch by an airbourne Liam Irving secured the wicket of Porter off the bowling of Matthew Smith who then claimed two further wickets in the same over.

This left Arbroath on 73 for 6 with four overs to get the remaining 29 runs. That proved just beyond the Scottish side as they closed on 95 for 7, Smith finishing with 3 wickets for 10.

Workington now face the County Champions from Yorkshire, Lancashire and Durham or Northumberland at Woodhouse Grange (Yorkshire) on July 28th - one of six Regional Finals.
