Despite the horrendous weather some progress was made in playing the various Cumbria Junior Cricket League Finals.
Ground-staff at Nunwick and Caldbeck worked wonders to ensure that some cricket was possible, with Nunwick staging the Under 13 (Pairs format) League Cup between Appleby and Carlisle Green (pictured left) on Friday.
Carlisle batted first, Matthew Hawley top scoring with 17 as Appleby's bowlers regularly took wickets. Eleven-year-old Josh Brabbins was the leading wicket-taker with 3-11.
There were also two wickets apiece for Ryan O Sullivan and Shane Barden as Carlisle closed on 275.
In reply, Appleby set off well with Richard Addison scoring 10 as they kept up with the pace. However, Harry Grant’s introduction to the bowling attack changed the game.
His three overs cost just one run and claimed two wickets. A further couple of wickets from Blythe left Appleby needing too many from the final couple of pairs of batsmen as they closed on 235
Caldbeck hosted the Under-11 League play-offs on Sunday.
First game up was the 'Western League' decider between Cockermouth and Cleator - both teams having finished joint top.
Cockermouth (pictured left) batted first and set 277 with Marcus Stables (15) and Daniel Fisher (13) top scoring.
In reply Cleator were restricted to 194 with Greg Rooney top scoring against an accurate Cockermouth bowling line up - Thomas Smith (4 wickets for 2 runs) and Marcus Stables (2-6) the leading bowlers.
That result meant that Cockermouth joined Carlisle Green and Keswick Sky in a three way round-robin final, Carlisle and Keswick having run out winners of their respective leagues.
Carlisle played Keswick in the next game and ran out winners by 33 runs, Carlisle reaching 258 in their innings as compared to Keswick's 225.
A win for Carlisle in their next game, against Cockermouth, would see the Edenside club retain the Under 11 trophy for a third consecutive year whilst a Cockermouth victory would take the finals into a third game between Cockermouth and Keswick
By now, intermittent light showers were starting to make conditions difficult for the fielders but despite that, Cockermouth did well to restrict Carlisle (pictured below right) to 247.
In reply, and with six overs remaining, Cockermouth were closing in on the Carlisle total when the weather took a turn for the worse, 15-20 minutes of much heavier rain leaving conditions unplayable. So it’s now onto next weekend to replay this game, as well as fit in a number of other Junior Finals.
