Another major Cup scalp for Academicals PDF Print E-mail

Cockermouth Academicals took total control of the Northside Group of the Downtown Deli Cup with another crucial victory.
They beat Sandwith Roofing, last year’s runners-up, to add to the scalp of Braithwaite, the reigning champions, last week.
The Roofers batted first and three batsmen all made 22 – John Hodgson, Tom McGeen and Phil Smart as Shakir Rajput and Johnny Allport both claimed 2-8. The Accies reached 118-7 as both Ryan Carruthers and Graham Sparke reached 31 retired. Neil Talbot 2-15 was the pick of the bowlers.

Braithwaite bounced back from their defeat with a comfortable victory at Maryport, after reaching 132-8 thanks to Andy Rigby (31 ret), Jason Pyke (30 ret) and Lee Zaninetti (25) as Gary Charters took 2-13.

The home side were restricted to 82-9 as only Graham Nicholson 20 got amongst the runs, with Zaninetti and Matthew Hodgson both picking up 2-12.

Isel picked up their first win of the competition at Baggrow. They had batted first and reached 134-6, in large part to 44 extras. Alan Brown made 30 retired with Callum Ward (2-9) the most successful bowler.

In reply Kieron McAvoy made 20 and Tom Smith 27 not out but they ran out of overs on 92-9 as James Gate with 3-8, Matt Eden 2-11 and Gerald Bowe 2-2 almost dismissed them.

Broughton’s win at Allonby completed a clean sweep of away victories. Ben Kyte (33 ret) and Anthony Andrews (24) scored half the runs between them, with Mark Hodgson 3-4 the best bowler.

In response to 104-7 Dave Smith with (32 ret), Gary Swanston (30 ret) and Jason Alexander (27no) combined to lead Broughton to 105-7 despite the efforts of Richard Burrough (2-5) and Mike Holyoake (2-11).

In the southside Windscale Club, Seascale and Royal George are still unbeaten. The senior Seascale side made the short trip to Distington and dismissed the home side for 97.

Sam Carter (20) and the Richardson brothers Steven (26) and Paul (27) scored the bulk of the runs. The wickets were shared around as Simon Beattie (2-17), Steve Brown senior (2-14) and his son Adam (2-7) all enjoying the wicket.

They powered to 100-4 with Steve Brown junior (32 ret), Matty McEwan (26no) and a rapid 30 retired from Malcom Garner propelling them to a six wicket victory.

The George were one of only two teams to win at home, holding Seascale Juniors to only 112-4, with Jack Graham (34 ret) and Stuart Dickinson (29) the best batsmen. They then eased to 115-4 thanks to three retirements: Neil Carruthers (31), Brian Thompson (30) and Andrew Davidson (35).

WCLS held Workington Juniors to 109-8 as only Andrew Shillito (30), Matthew Lowden (21) and Paul Shillito (24) got amongst the runs.  Chris Bowness with 3-4 was the pick of the bowlers.

The Lawyers were made to work for their victory as Lowden (2-16) completed a good match. Lee Norman hit 31 retired to see the Lawyers home at 110-7.
