The second round of matches in the 2010 Downtown Deli Cup saw a mixture of close and one-sided matches.

Shock of the week saw the defending champions Braithwaite losing at home to Cockermouth Academicals.

Batting first the Accies made 132-5 thanks to Ryan Carruthers (35 ret), supported by Hugh Carter (26) and Johnny Allport (23no).

In reply the holders were restricted to 95-8 with only Jason Pyke (27) amongst the runs as Shakir Rajput (2-4) and Allport (2-19) did best with the ball.

The closest contest saw Broughton hang on for a 1 run win over Isel. Andy Skelton made 33 retired as all eight Isel bowlers took a wicket to dismiss the visitors for 109. Matt Eden did best with 2-15.

Alan Brown dug in for 32 retired but Isel were always behind the asking rate and the final bowling pair of Gary Graham (2-15) and Steve Mossop (2-12) held their nerve better than Isel’s tail to keep them to 108-9.

A high scoring match at Seascale saw the senior team defeat their juniors by only eight runs.

Windscale Club, Seascale posted 137-5 as Matty McEwan with 30 and Steve Brown junior on 35 both retired.

In reply the Lee brothers Daniel and Clayton each made 24 and Ollie Burn (25no) as the old head Steve Brown senior (2-15) prevented an upset.

BCMS were routed for 46 as Paul Davidson (2-7), John Chisnall (2-2_, Ian Studholme (2-9) and Andrew Dodds (2-4) combined to dismiss them. Two BCMS stalwarts Wayne Nixon (2-9) and Richie Knowles (2-0) made Royal George work to reach 47-4.

The individual performance of the week came from Malcolm Patterson as he picked up a career best 5-6 against Allonby. He couldn’t improve on this as Allonby only had eight men and were all out for 61.

Ben Kyte failed with the bat, but took 2-8 with the ball as Will Gate (29no) led Baggrow 2 to 65-2.

Distington could not raise a team to face WCLS.

Workington Juniors made 121-8 thanks to Josh Burns’ 31 retired. Callum Lofthouse with 2-14 was the pick of the Whitehaven Colts bowlers. The Colts reached 124-6 as Mike Bean (31 ret) and Ben Cavaghan (26) combined effectively.

Maryport travelled to the Sandwith Roofing fortress at the Valentine Ground and held their hosts to 137-5 with Jake Daniel (30 ret) and Phil Smart (33 ret) to the fore.

In reply the visitors were all out for 79 as only Neil Bewley 25no resisted. Daniel (2-6) and Russ Herring (2-18) were the leading bowlers.

After two rounds of matches only Cockermouth Academicals and Sandwith Roofing in the Northside remain unbeaten and they meet next week. In the Southside Royal George and Windscale Club, Seascale are the teams with two wins each.
