Seven-year old Kian Brown was instrumental in BCMS winning their first West Allerdale and Copeland Midweek League game of the season.
The youngster didn’t score a run, hold a catch or bow for BCMS, who only had six but his fielding energy and enthusiasm was infectious.
It helped BCMS defend 141-5 which was built around a century partnership between Mike Yeoman (39) and Wayne Nixon (57).
Three batsmen made significant contributions in Cockermouth Academicals reply of 121-6, namely Graham Sparke (27), Malcolm Dixon (36) and Luke Neesham (49), but were derailed by Nixon (2-10) and Steve Wilson (2-16).
Braithwaite dismissed Sandwith Roofing for 116 with John Hodgson (21), Kristian Moffat (29) and Phil Smart (21) the major scorers. Dan Pyke (2-13) and Ian Dixon (2-27) were their most successful bowlers.
But in reply Braithwaite themselves were restricted to 85-8 with Chris Hodgson (23) alone passing twenty. Brain Moore picked up 2-12.
Only challengers to Sandwith Roofing are Windscale Club, Seascale who had another big win this time over the Royal George after running-up 146-7 with three retirements – Matty McEwan (30), Paul Knott (34) and Steve Brown junior (35).
Royal George were bundled out for just 62 with Pete Rooney (2-8), Paul Knott (3-0) and Steve Brown senior (2-9) sharing the spoils.
The Division Two title hunt is still a three horse race, while Workington Juniors still can theoretically join the three, but will rely on weather as Distington still have the other two (Baggrow 2 and WCLS) to play and unless the points are shared at least once they will be unable to win the Division.
Distington remain in charge of their destiny after a comprehensive victory at the Valentine Ground by posting 169-2 as Adam Chambers (32 ret) set the platform for the Richardson brothers allowing Paul (52no) and Steve (58no) to explode.
Workington Juniors were contained, closing on 81-7 after Paul Shillito had retired on 30 and there were no more significant scores. Ian Butler (2-15) and Mike Wilson (2-8) prospered.
WCLS lead the Division still, but have played a game more, after a close fought win against Isel.
The Lawyers were dismissed for 102 on a difficult wicket with John Burns’20 the highest scorer. The Isel captain James Gate (3-15) was the pick of the bowlers. He was the leading batsman also with 36 as Isel ended just short on 93-9.
Broughton made only 91-5 against Baggrow as the top order fell to Farhan Zahid (3-2) and Ed Gate (2-10) before Gary Graham (22) rescued the visitors. Zarfran Zahid (33) and Jason Pyke (24) did the bulk of the work as Baggrow reached 92-5 to keep their title hopes alive.
In a low scoring contest at Dovenby Hall, Seascale Juniors were bowled out for 84 as Steve Brown junior with 29 was comfortably the highest scorer in the match. Mike Holyoake (2-17), Micky Ash (2-4) and Gary Blacklock (2-4) all enjoyed the conditions.
If not for 15 extras Allonby’s reply would have been even smaller than the 46 they made as young and old alike cashed in - Joe Graham with 2-13 and Andy Lee with 2-3.
In the Border Leisure League Cockermouth Academicals bounced back from their League defeat the night before against Isel 2.
An incendiary innings of 23 by Ryan Caruthers was supported by a more restrained 27 retired from Graham Sparke. Matt Eden with 29 retired and Steve Balmforth (21) kept Isel in the hunt, but upon Balmforth’s dismissal they quickly folded for 69.
Workington CC Dads were dismissed for 58 with Callum Sutton making 27 retired and Mike Baker claiming 2-9. Whitehaven Colts had no difficulty reaching 60-1, and that one ‘wicket’ was Nathan Lee who made 27 retired.
