Keswick moved to within two points of leaders Furness after another win in the North Lancs Cumbria League’s Premier Division.

For while Keswick were beating Cleator by six wickets, the reigning champions were frustrated by Carlisle and had to settle for a winning draw.

Keswick had been surprisingly beaten by Cleator in the Higson Cup so were pleased to gain revenge with a six wicket win.

Cleator could only manage 117 and would have been in deeper trouble but for a battling 36 from Chris Quin. Stuart Dowson took 3-14 for Keswick.

Professional Paul Hindmarch was 55 not out in the winning Keswick reply of 120-4.

Furness were denied by Carlisle after they had hammered 276-4 in their 50 overs led by openers Mike Gadsden (91) and Glen Capstick (77), as well as South African pro Niel Bredenkamp (40).

Marc Brown (29) and Alex Raybould (34) started solidly enough for Carlisle but it was pretty soon apparent that a draw was their only target. Young spinner Jordan Buchanan took 3-29 from nine overs but the city side earned their draw at 152-8.

Workington continued their good form with a comfortable win over Kirkby at the Ernest Valentine Memorial Ground.

Asked to bat first, Workington made excellent first use of the wicket as Andrew Reed and Callum Moffat put on 126 for the first wicket.

When Moffat was dismissed for 71 Stephen Benson joined Reed and they put on 124. Benson scored 44 while Reed went on to make 96 and the innings closed on 301-4 with young Jake Daniel (20 no) and Simon James (19) doing their bit late-on.

Kirkby’s reply started badly and they were 2-3 after two overs, Mike Fugler scored 49 to aid the recovery but the innings closed on 139 in the 42nd over.

Wickets were shared between James (3-9), Matthew Gorley (3-43), Dan McDermott (2-21) and  Adam Walker (2-56).
Cockermouth collected a much needed win from a high-scoring game with Penrith.

Professional Upul Fernando (85no) and Andrew Hall (67) were largely responsible for Penrith reaching 249-2. but it wasn’t enough, despite the efforts of Marcus Todd.

He took 5-48 when Cockermouth responded but Ryan Carruthers (69) and Chris Hodgson (65) helped guide Cockermouth to the winning points on 251-7.

Habib Baloch has been around the North Lancs scene for a number of years and he can still get among the wickets. His 4-45 helped Whitehaven dismiss Haverigg for 194 despite a bold show from Steve Evans (95).

Earlier Whitehaven had made 233-4. led by Andrew Kelly (82) and professional Ryan Butterworth (71).

Millom were too strong for bottom side Vickerstown with skipper Simon Bickerstaffe returning the day’s best bowling performance of 8-26. At one point Bickerstaffe had bowled six consecutive wicket maidens.

The Walney team limped to 102 and were indebted to Andy Ireland (31) for getting up and beyond the century mark.

Vickerstown removed Millom pro Majid Jahangir very early in the reply but Ryan Brown (23) played a sheet anchor role at the top of the order and they went on to win comfortably at 102-4.

The big game in Division One was at Appleby Eden where the home side scored an important win over promotion rivals Wigton.

Professional Scott Clement showed his worth to the Appleby Eden side as he finished with 6-32 when Wigton were bowled-out for 145. Mike Holliday kept them afloat with a good 56.

Clement wasn’t finished then as he scored an unbeaten 49 as Appleby reached their victory target with only five wickets down. Scott Thomlinson chipped-in with 42.

Hawcoat Park’s opener Ryan Lucas made 120 of his side’s 232-9 against Workington seconds. Pete Harrison (31) supported best while Dave Pearce took 4-28 for the west Cumbrians.

Workington were never threatening and were eventually bowled-out for 136 with Steve Hannaway (3-20) and Matthew Haines (3-36) doing best with the ball.

Egremont were on the receiving end at home to Ulverston after the visitors made 196 mainly due to Steve Oliver (60) and Stuart Cooper (34). Richard Booth took 3-22 and Craig Roberts had 3-65.

Egremont lost wickets at regular intervals against mainly Gareth Yates (4-34) in 15 overs and Cooper (4-9) in eight overs. They were eventually all out for 125 with Shaun Bostock top-scoring on 27.

Lanercost had a good six-wicket win over Millom II as they chased down 190-8. Kieron Forster (5-46) bowled well for Lanercost in a rather stop-start Millom innings.

Openers Danny Fallows (28) and Tom Wilkinson (21) started solidly before skipper Michael Gill cracked 51 but Foster struck and Millom’s 120-2 became 137-8.

But then a big-hitting unbroken stand of 53 between Kyle Murphy (22no) and Don Gill (31no) took Millom II to 190-8.

Against a weakened Millom attack Lanercost started well and built on it to reach 193 for 4 in the 45th over with David Ferguson (62 no) guiding them home.

Cleator seconds were bowled-out for 110 at Dalton as they slumped to a 92-run defeat.

If it hadn’t been for Mark Ponticelli (51) Cleator would have been in desperate trouble as they struggled, mainly, against John Bell (4-18).

Dalton had made 202-7 led by Justin Quint (59) while seasoned campaigner Alan Wishart took 3-33 for Cleator.

Lindal Moor enjoyed a four-wicket win at leaders Duddon SC after the hosts were bowled-out for 123. Joe Alexander top-scored with 27 while Jake Cumberbatch took 3-27.

Colin Knight led the way in Lindal’s reply with 64 in a winning reply of 127-6.

Seascale stayed top of Division Two with a comfortable win at home to Dalton Reserves after they elected to bat first.
It went well as they scored freely and eventually declared on 306-8 after 46 overs.

Steve Brown junior top-scored with 73 and there were other useful contributions from Greg Bedford (55), Jack Stubbings (41) and Adam Brown (36).

In reply Dalton were bowled out for 108. Steve Brown senior (4-24), Stubbings (3-4) and veteran Andy Lee (3-28) shared the wickets.

On Sunday Seascale made it through to their first ever Vigodny Cup final with an exciting semi-final win at Whitehaven Reserves.

Put into bat first they made an impressive 256-8 from their 45 overs. Steve Brown junior top-scored with 62; his brother Adam Brown hit 50 and Michael Fidler, playing his first game in over six years, also hit 50. Rob Carlill (2-48) and Shakeer (2-61) were the pick of the Whitehaven bowlers.

In reply Whitehaven were always up with the run-rate thanks to knocks from Rob Carlill (56) and Lee Norman (34).

A great spell of bowling from Seascale's Pete Rooney (3-31 from nine overs) however pegged Whitehaven back in the middle of the innings and despite some late hitting from Shakeer (61) they finished on 245 all out off the last ball of the last over.

Seascale will face Haverigg in the final on 18th July at a venue to be decided
