KESWICK suffered a major set-back in the race for the North Lancs Cumbria Premier Division crown.

They were skittled for just 69 by neighbours Penrith who went on to complete a seven-wicket win – and revive their own faltering championship hopes.

Nick Burns was the main destroyer with 4-10 and Keswick weren’t able to get back into the game.

In the meantime leaders and champions Furness were able to extend their advantage to twelve points, despite almost losing out against Cockermouth – playing ironically at Keswick.

Cockermouth made 177-7 with Gareth White (69 not out) and Ian Buchanan (45) the main source of runs. Peter Lawson took 4-41 for Furness.

Because of rain, Furness lost overs, but needed skipper Stuart Horne and Lawson, to dig in for the eleven point draw at 137 for 9. Professional Neil Bredenkamp top-scored with 56, while Cockermouth’s Steve Chambers took 4-32.

The big win over Keswick, though, has put Penrith back with an outside chance, although they are still 30 points behind Furness.

Fourth-placed Workington’s poor form continued when they lost by five wickets to Cleator.

Batting first only Andrew Reed (33) and Simon James (36) made significant contributions as they were dismissed for 125 in the 50th over. David Rooney took 5-34.

Professional Paul Duffett with 46 and Chris Quin with 49 not out saw Cleator home in the 43rd over with five wickets to spare.

Whitehaven got the better of a draw at Millom although at one point they looked to be on course for victory.

Chasing Whitehaven’s impressive 247-8 Millom made a poor start and when professional Majid Jahangir went for 40, the home team were 80-5.

However, the lower order got their heads down, and Adam Kelly (44 not out), Mike Wilson (26) and Andrew Dawson (20) was them to a draw on 177-8. Habib Baloch (3-40) and Scott Rumney (3-42) had most bowling success for Whitehaven.

Batting first Whitehaven were boosted by good scoring at the top of the order with Dave Watson (79), Andrew Kelly (78), professional Ryan Butterworth (30no) and Steve Holliday (30) all among the runs.

Majid took 4-32 and Simon Bickerstaffe had 3-77 for Millom.

In the relegation crunch match at Kirkby, visitors Haverigg got the better of a draw, taking 16 points to their hosts seven.
Haverigg professional Basid Khan (101) and Steve Evans (62) did the bulk of the scoring in a total of 228-7.

Basid then did well with the ball, taking 5-37 as Kirkby struggled to a draw at 102-8. Lee Stephens top-scored with 20 for Kirkby.

Carlisle and Vickerstown were both promoted last year but while the city side have kicked-on to a solid mid-table berth, their south Cumbrian rivals are looking like making a quick return.

They were bowled-out for 114 in pursuit of Carlisle’s 178 and are stuck in bottom place in touch with Kirkby but slipping away from the rest of the pack.

Professional Saliya Saman top-scored with 44 for Carlisle with Mike Gibson taking 4-60 for Vickerstown.

Stuart Tippett made a gutsy 35 but Lee Readitt posed too many problems and finished with 5-31.

There was a low-scoring Division One game at Cleator where the home seconds were bowled-out for 35 after chasing Lanercost’s very modest 53.

Not surprisingly bowlers held all the aces - Mark Ponticelli (4-9 and Dave Glover (4-17) for Cleator and Keith Forster (4-6) and Will Freebairn (4-21) for Lanercost.

At the top Wigton just lead Appleby Eden by two points, although they had the weather to thank.

Appleby Eden were 88-5 against visitors Ulverston when rain ended proceedings and the two sides took nine points each.

Wigton went top after beating visitors Millom seconds by seven wickets – a result which pushed the south Cumbrians into a relegation battle.

Andrew Simons made 100 not out in a Millom total of 186-5 with Glen Liddle taking 3-46 for Wigton.

Mike Holliday (45), Bobby Sherlock (41 not out) and Gerrard Jackson (41) all batted solidly to see Wigton through to victory and top of the League spot.

Dalton had to work hard for runs at home to Hawcoat Park but eventually reached 124-9 with Liam Curwen (25) and the tail-enders Tony Butler (20), Lewis Woodend, (15 not out) and Brian Bell (14 not out) largely responsible. Peter Wall took 6-37 for Hawcoat Park.

The visitors eventually won by three wicket with Dave Muncaster (44) producing the key innings. Marc Gibson took 3-12.

Duddon batted first at home to Egremont and made 172-7 with the top contributions from Bradley Chapples (42) and Liam Gribbin (36). John Brocklebank with 63 figured prominently in Egremont’s response of 141-8.

Lindal Moor were bowled-out for 71 at home to Workington seconds as Andrew Shillito (4-16) and Paul McKeown (4-32) did the damage. Although the west Cumbrians made hard work of it they eventually won on 72-6.
