Two of the top four clashed at the Valentine Ground and produced a thrilling North Lancs Premier Division clash.

Workington lost an exciting game when Keswick hit their target with five wickets and two balls to spare.

The home side was invited to bat and the innings was dominated by a stand of 174 for the first wicket between Callum Moffat – who was unluckily dismissed on 99 for the second time this season – and Andrew Reed (79).

Matthew Gorley also scored 26 and the innings ended on 247-8. Glenn Weightman was the most Keswick successful bowler with 4-74.

Keswick’s reply was built on solid performances and with Richard Webster (94), John Phillips (55) and pro Paul Hindmarch (50 not out) they scored 248-5.

Workington will go back to Millom tomorrow night to play their County Cup tie which was rained-off last week.

Furness stay top, however, as they scored a five wicket win over Whitehaven after the west Cumbrians had made 193-9.
Habib Baloch top-scored for Whitehaven with 48 not while Graham Capstick took 5-58 for Furness.

Professional Niel Bredenhamp laid the platform for the champions’ winning response when he made 99 and his team-mates saw it through to the conclusion at 194-5.

Penrith’s blistering start to the season has come unstuck and they were on the receiving end again, going down by four wickets to Kirkby.

Martyn Challenor (71no) and Nicky Birtle (51) were the leading batsmen for Penrith in a total of 199-6. Ryan Tyson took 3-39 for Kirkby.

Paul Tyson (95no) was the mainstay for Kirkby in their winning reply of 203-6 with professional Upul Fernando taking 3-50 for Penrith.

Cockermouth took on Haverigg at Keswick’s Fitz Park and slumped to a seven wicket defeat.

They were bowled-out for 103 with only Ryan Carruthers (27) and Chris Hodgson (22) offering much resistance. Bazid Khan took 4-10 for Haverigg with Craig Armstrong taking 4-46.

Haverigg went to an easy victory when they reached 104-3 with Bazid making 36 not out and Gary Stewart 25 not out.

Meanwhile former Cockermouth opener Greg Platten continued his impressive start to his Barrow career with an excellent 86 off 121 balls in a win over Fleetwood.

At home to Carlisle, Millom were invited to bat first and although losing Danny Mackie, professional Majid Jahangir and Simon Johnson fairly cheaply, they were revived by a crucial stand involving Ryan Brown (69) and Peter Brockbank (28).

For Carlisle Craig Foxcroft took 5-29 and Lee Readitt had 3-43 as Millom were eventually bowled-out for 174.

Majid was the bowling star for Millom, taking 6 for 27 as Carlisle were dismissed for 140.  Marc Brown (38) and professional Saliya Saman (24) were the leading batsmen for the city side.

At bottom-of-the-table Vickerstown, visitors Cleator declared at 244 for 7 with professional Paul Duffett (92) and Robert Mason (52) in the vanguard.

Dave Rooney took 4-40 and David Blackwell had 4-48 when Vickerstown were bowled-out for 114.

In Division One, Appleby Eden made hay while Lindal floundered and Wigton also stepped-up their championship challenge while Duddon stayed top with a narrow win.

Hosting Hawcoat Park, Appleby Eden made 239-7 led by Terry Askew (91) and then bowled-out their visitors for 115.

Dave Muncaster made 58 of those for Hawcoat Park while Phil Cook (3-16) and professional Scott Clement (3-25) did most of the damage between them.

Lindal Moor made 177 at Cleator seconds but it wasn’t enough and their hosts edged their way to victory at 178-8.

Colin Knight (82) top-scored for Lindal while Mark Ponticelli had 4-38 for Cleator. In the end Patrick Williamson’s 61 proved vital for the west Cumbrians.

In a tense contest at Askam Duddon SC squeezed to a one-wicket win against Lanercost.

Sam Alexander took 3-20 for Duddon as Lanercost were bowled-out for 143 but they looked beaten until an unbroken last wicket stand between Chris Brookshaw (46 not out) and Bradley Chapples (23 not out) got them to 145-9.

Ulverston’s long trip to Wigton was not one to savour as they were bowled-out for 82 and slumped to a seven wicket defeat.

Nick Watt took 3-10 and Steve Murdock had 3-15 for Wigton with Gareth Yates making 24 for Ulverston.

Dalton were all out for 117 in 48 overs at home to Workington seconds as Liam Steele top-scored with 25.

Veteran Paul McKeown is having an outstanding season for Workington, regularly turning the clock back to his best moments for the club, and he garnered another five-wicket haul at a cost of 28.

Workington didn’t find it easy in reply but opener Ian Batty (46) was a vital cog in the winning machine as he saw the visitors home at 118 for 6. Steele took 3-26.

Egremont made their best score for a while against Millom seconds and finished on 179-9. They were boosted by Dave Raynor (65),  Gavin Parkinson (38 not out) and Shaun Bostock (26), not to mention no fewer than 36 extras. Jake Pennington and Ashley Smith each took three wickets.

But it wasn’t enough as Millom responded with 183-8 led by skipper Michael Gill (80), Tom Wilkinson (23) and Martin Burn (21 not out). Richard Booth took 3-42 for Egremont.

In Division Two Seascale earned 16 points from a winning draw at Haverigg Reserves.

They opted to bat first and openers Lee Fleet (44) and JackStubbings (57) got them off to a good start before Phil Knott (24no) and Jack Graham (20no) added some impetus at the end to see them reach 202-6 from their 50 overs.

In reply Haverigg also got off to a good start  but an excellent spell of bowling from Steve Brown junior (5-39 from 15 overs) pegged them back and they eventually settled for a draw on 151-8.
