FURNESS and Whitehaven were the only sides to collect maximum points in the Premier Division of the North Lancs Cumbria League.

Leaders Furness were able to marginally extend their advantage at the top as they beat Haverigg by six wickets.

Peter Lawson took 4-49 when Haverigg reached 176-9, with the major contributions from Bazid Khan (59) and Stephen Chapman (58). Then Michael Gadsden (72) and Glenn Capstick (51) were largely responsible for the champions’ winning response of 179-4.

Whitehaven came out on top in their Copeland derby with Cleator when over 500 runs were scored.

Professional Paul Duffett (61), Chris Quin (57) and Robert Mason (56no) top-scored in Cleator’s 255-4.

It was a stiff task but Whitehaven responded superbly with pro Ryan Butterworth (100no) and Jonathan Bruce (75) the mainstays in a winning reply of 256-4 with two overs to spare.

Cockermouth are having to play some of their matches at Keswick’s Fitz Park and the two met-up for a game in which more than 250 runs were scored.

Keswick hammered 284-3 from their 50 overs with Workington Reds footballer Steve Hindmarch (108) and Richard Webster (103) figuring in a big opening stand.

Cockermouth were never going to get near that but they dug in well and earned the draw on 173-8 with Ryan Carruthers leading the defiance with 69 not out.

There were also two centurions for Penrith at home to Millom as they reached an impressive 324-4 with Nicky Burns top-scoring on 144 and Andrew Hall adding 128.

It was clearly a good batting track as Millom’s professional Majid Jahangir became the game’s third century-maker with 115 not out. The Millom reply of 188-3 was good enough to earn the visitor eight points.

Workington were on the wrong end of a draw at Carlisle after the home side batted first and opener Mark Brown carried his bat through the 50 overs for 97 not out.

He had been joined at 54-2 by Saliya Saman and they added 153 before the professionl was run out for 78. The innings closed on 217-3.

Workington were 53-3 but then Jake Daniel and Simon James added 73.  Daniel was dismissed for 54; James was later run out for 41 and at 162-7 the game seemed over.

However Martyn Turner (25) and Phil Armstrong (21 no) brought them back into the game and six were needed off the final over. Saman’s nerve held and Workington could only muster three singles to finish two runs short on 215-8.

Bottom side Vickerstown closed the gap on the team immediately above them when they had six more points from the draw than their fellow strugglers, Kirkby.

Batting first Vickerstown made 241 for 8 with Steve Beckman top-scoring on 62, while Kirkby’s Mike Etchells took 3 for 29.

In reply, Kirkby gave it a good go but just fell short at 240-8.

Rob Fugler top-scored with 53, well supported by Paul New (44) and Paul Tyson (43) while Vickerstown skipper Gareth Benson took 3 for 39.

Division One leaders Duddon SC battled hard to beat Workington seconds by two wickets to maintain pole position.

In their 50 overs Workington seconds made 158-8 led by Ian Batty (44) and Adam Chambers (39 no) while seasoned campaigner Gary Stevenson took 4-35 for Duddon.

Workington made them work hard in reply but they eventually sealed victory on 161-8 with Chris Brookshaw (45) and Bradley Chapples (30no) leading the way.

There was an excellent bowling performance from Wigton’s Glen Liddle as he took 7-30 which had hosts Lindal Moor in disarray, eventually sliding to 97 all out.

It wasn’t a stroll for Wigton in reply but they had enough in reserve as they got to 101-6 to claim maximum points. John Atkinson took 3-17 for Lindal.

Appleby Eden’s promotion ambitions suffered a set-back at Cleator seconds where they were soundly beaten by seven wickets.

The visitors only managed 117 all out as Scott Saunders (4-28) and Alan Wishart (4-60) enjoyed their spells with the ball.

In reply, James Rogers anchored Cleator’s winning score of 118-3 with 71 not out.

Lanercost edged home by two wickets against visitors Egremont after they had dismissed the west Cumbrians for 144. Shaun Bostock (49) offered most resistance as Dave Ferguson (3-20) and Craig Foster (3-37) were the main wicket-takers.

Ferguson also figured prominently with the bat when Lanercost made a winning reply of 147-8. He made 64 while Bostock also completed a fine individual match by taking 4-39.

Millom II made an impressive 234-8 at home to Hawcoat Park, mainly due to opener Simon Johnson who carried his bat for an unbeaten 105.

Michael Gill was next best with 33 and they were helped by 34 extras while Chris Savage (3-54) and Ryan Lucas (2-27) did best with the ball for Hawcoat Park.

Hawcoat Park were bowled-out for 157 with three overs to spare and really needed Steve Thorburn (31), Sam Hilton (31) or Dave Muncaster (29) to go on longer for a big score to earn the draw.

David High took 5-41 in his 15 overs for Millom II who were recording back-to-back wins.

The best bowling performance of the day came from Ulverston’s Gareth Yates who took 8-35 against visitors Dalton as they were shot out for 71.

There were no such problems for Ulverston as their openers Mike Cull (50no) and David Blain (20no) eased them quickly to victory on 74-0.

In Division Two Seascale stayed in second place with a hard fought win over neighbours Windscale.

Put into bat, Seascale suffered a mid-order collapse but recovered from 71-5 to post a creditable 170-8 from their 50 overs. Jack Stubbings (43), Jack Graham (26) and veteran Phil Knott (48no) were amongst the runs.

In reply Windscale were always behind the required rate but some late hitting from Simon Wilson (32) brought them tantalisingly close before being all out for 142 in 47.4 overs.

Seascale's skipper Steve Brown senior took 2-36 from 15 overs and Stubbings had a fine all round game taking 5-35.

On Sunday Workington lost at Haverigg in the Higson Cup after their top order failed. At 57-5 from 17 they were heading for a heavy defeat. Craig Armstrong had done the damage with 4-31 from his nine overs.

Workington were indebted to former captain Steve Benson who held firm and ended the innings 78 not out. He had great support from Dan McDermott (29) who joined him at 98-8 and they added 70 for the ninth wicket.

The innings closed on 180-9 with Steve Evans taking 3-16 from nine overs.

Any hopes of winning however were dashed by stalwarts Steve Chapman and Robert Bell who put on 91 for the first wicket. Chapman made 49 but Bell saw it through to the end with 85 not out as they finished on 181-4 with 4.2 overs to spare.

In the other quarter final ties Cleator turned the formbook upside down to beat Keswick by 31 runs.

Chris Quin made 89 in Cleator’s total of 240-8 and Keswick were bowled out for 209 with Graham Clark taking 5-36.

Millom made the day’s biggest score of 279-8 with Stuart Swallow (87) and Ryan Brown (86) leading the way and it proved too much for Dalton, the only First Division side left in the competition.

Dalton were bowled-out for 191 with Rob Jones top-scoring on 66, while Paul O’Callaghan (3-31) and Simon Bickerstaffe (3-35) shone with the ball for Millom.

Whitehaven set-up a semi-final trip to Millom when they beat Carlisle by six wickets at the Playground.

Carlisle were bowled-out for 139 with Whitehaven making 142-4 in reply.

The semi-finals on July 4 will be: Cleator v Haverigg and Millom v Whitehaven.

Seascale played their delayed Vigodny Cup game at home to Dalton reserves.

Electing to bat first Dalton were soon in trouble and were eventually dismissed for just 89. Greg Bedford (2-12) Steve Brown junior(4-22) and veteran Andy Lee (2-20) did the damage for Seascale. In reply Seascale cruised to a ten wicket win on 93-0 with Lee Fleet hitting 52no and Adam Brown 36no.

The win sets up a semi-final tie at Whitehaven Reserves.
