Steve Charles.Gainsborough Trinity manager Steve Charles says his team is not good enough to earn promotion this season after seeing them slump to a 5-0 defeat at Borough Park.

Until they crashed to a rampant Workington Reds, his Trinity side had lost only one in eight League games and climbed to seventh in the table.

But Charles has admitted that he has hardly any positives to take from the defeat, with the exception of the performances of goalkeeper Adam Sollitt and midfielder Lewis McMahon.

"It was a bad day at the office, definitely," Charles told the Lincolnshire Sports Echo.

"We were disappointing from start to finish despite all our preparations for the game going well.

"The conditions were awful, but that is no excuse - they were the same for both teams, but Workington adapted to them better.
"They got two early goals which gave them the momentum and they got the third just before half-time."

The Trinity boss feels the main problem is a lack of consistency and concedes that he is also partly to blame for the current state of affairs.

He added: "We have looked very shaky defensively. Nicky Ellis had to pull out before the Workington game with a groin injury sustained in training, so we had to change things again in the back four through no fault of our own.

"But those who came in should have been able to do better. I couldn't rant and rave though, because so many things were wrong with the performance.

"The bottom line is, we are not consistent enough and if the club wants to go to the next level, we are not good enough if we are being honest. That is proven by the results.

"I feel under pressure a little as well and clearly I need to do better."
