howvfrostThe first round of the Veterans County Cup was played out last week with six ties producing 27 goals.

Top scorers were Grasslot who won 7-0 at Hall Park Hotel in what was a top versus bottom clash.

The gulf was underlined by the final score with goals from Phil Graham (3), Mike Dempsey, Phil Hoyles, Dale Patrick and Stuart Stevenson.

Silloth made it three wins on the trot with a well deserved 4-0 victory over the Cockermouth side Globe with goals from Ken Derbyshire (2) and Andrew Harrison.

Bluebell against St. Bede’s was certainly a game of two halves. In the first half home side Bluebell played against a fierce wind and went in two goals behind at the break, the second goal coming with a minute to go.

Doug Sharpe and Shaun Richardson were on target for the Carlisle side.

In the second half it was all Bluebell and from a superb corner from Kenny Kirkwood, Roger Gambles scored with a great header.

St Bede’s defended for the rest of the second half and with a minute to go Kirkwood hit the inside of the post from a free kick with Steven Powell missing the rebound. It was an excellent game refereed superbly by Jason Kiggins.

Carlisle City moved smoothly through to round with 4-0 victory over the Bush. Barry Pilkington (2), Peter Harbach and Colin West were the City scorers.

Netherhall, last season’s beaten finalists in the County Cup, eventually won through to the second round on penalties. Billy Gilmour scored both goals for Netherhall in the 2-2 draw with Brian Black and Paul Telford replying for Zimmer's before penalties decided it for the Maryport side.

Holders Moresby overcame a very spirited Whitehaven team 3-2 to move into the next round. A Gary Charlton hat-trick gave Moresby the win but Whitehaven made the holders fight all the way with goals from Paul Hodgson and Billy Crane.

There was one game in Division Two of the West Cumbria Over-35’s League in which Howard’s Rangers beat Frostoms 4-0.

Frostoms good start to the season came unstuck at the Sheepmount and despite being under pressure from the start the Workington side held out, eventually giving the home side a run for their money.

Howard's keeper Barry "the cat" Stevenson was the busier of the two keeper making a couple of smart saves.

The home team finally made the pressure pay when Kevin Hewitson headed in and a second followed two minutes later when Jeremy Dawkins fired home despite looking at least two yards offside.

Andy Small's cross/shot flew in to make it 3-0 after 67 minutes and Mark Herd completed the scoring in the 80th minute.

However Johnny Pears should have made it five but somehow managed to put his header in front of an open goal out for a throw in.
