In the first round of the County Cup for Over-35’s Penrith travelled to Frizington White Star with just one substitute.
They were missing six of the team who gained a draw at league champions Carlisle City the previous week with defender Steven Reid having to stand in as a make shift goalkeeper.
Perhaps it was no surprise that the west Cumbrians emerged victorious 3-1.
Penrith slightly shaded the opening exchanges and created one or two good chances but it was the hosts who took the lead when a cross into the box bounced up awkwardly and hit Martin Blenkinship on the arm. David Bowness scored from the resultant spot kick.
Within five minutes Penrith were level when Ian Fleming played a great ball through to Dave Ryding and he finished superbly with a clever half volley.
Penrith finished the half well on top but failed to capitalise on the few good chances that fell to them.
With only one substitute and playing in blistering heat it was always going to be an uphill struggle in the second half and almost straight from the kick off Frizington were awarded another penalty. This time Reid pulled off a good save to keep the scores level. Ten minutes later Frizington did take the lead when a shot from Eddie Bury went under the unfortunate Reid.
It was all Frizington now and they hit the woodwork twice in search of the killer goal. Penrith managed to rally somehow and they too struck the post and the bar, however in the closing moments the home side got the third goal that they deserved when Steven Carruthers scored to hand Penrith their first defeat of the new campaign.
In Division One of the West Cumbria Over-35’s League Whitehaven beat Grasslot 5-2, their first win of the season.
For Grasslot Phil Graham scored both goals but a Mark Whalley hat-trick lifted Whitehaven, who also had Steve Mattinson and Dave Stamp on the score sheet.
Carlisle City went top of the League with an emphatic 4-0 win over St Bede’s but no scorers have been circulated.
In Division Two Frostoms started very strongly in their game at Moresby and went on to win 4-2.
Mike Cameron, Barry Hitchen, Wayne Murray and Kevin Young gave the Workington team a four goal lead after 20 minutes.
Moresby tried to hit back but were thwarted by the woodwork when Chris Kelly hit a free kick against a post and a penalty against the crossbar.
In the second half goals from Dave Collins and David Ward pulled the home side back in the game, however Frostoms held for the win which put them top of the league for the first time in the team’s 15 year history.
It’s a fitting reward for Barry Hitchen, Tony McMullen, Paul Martin and Graham Pennie who have played through thick and thin in every season for the club which entered the league in the 1994 season.
The win gave the Workington team a perfect send off to Switzerland this weekend where they will play in a four tournament in Basel against Concordia FC, Sparta Helvetik and Buschwilerhof FC.
Elsewhere in Division Two Bluebell came unstuck against an improving Silloth side and went down 3-1 but unfortunately no scorers were given.
The Bush came out on top in a five goal thriller of a local derby at Grassmoor against the Globe Hotel who had opened the scoring through Mike Sadler.
Gavin Askew equalised for the Bush only for Tony Allaker to give the lead back to the Globe.
Steve Cunningham then equalised in the second half for the Bush and with the game seemingly set for a draw a penalty in the final minute was converted by Mally O'Hare for the 3-2 win.
Howard’s Rangers beat Hall Park Hotel 3-1 after a good game and despite conceding the opening goal.
Hall Park had taken a shock lead with a fantastic Andy Yoxall volley after ten minutes.
Howard Rangers were made to work hard for the win as the Hall Park could have gone in at half time well ahead after hitting the crossbar on two other occasions. The half ended 1-1 as Kev Hewitson grabbed the equaliser late on.
The home team were the stronger in the second half and John Pears broke through to give Howard's Rangers the lead after 60 minutes.
The game was ended as a contest in the 80th minute when Kev Hewitson was brought down in the area and Eifion Owen stepped up to convert the penalty.
