Cumberland dent Manchester's League title hopes PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 02 February 2009

Cumberland Unmder-18’s had their best result of the season against their high flying Manchester FA counterparts.
.
The Cumbrians fielded 11 of Workington Reds squad out of their 15 players with the Manchester squad of 23 containing all F.C United and Salford City players.

Strong winds made for very difficult conditions and Cumberland had the elements at their backs in the first-half when they created the better chances and had the best of the game.

It was expected to be the same pattern in the second half with Manchester dominating with the wind behind them.

In fact Cumberland were even better in the second half playing into the wind. The best chance of the whole game came from a goal mouth scramble which the Manchester defenders blocked three times on the line from close range.

The draw for Manchester severely dented their hopes of winning the Northern FA Under-18’s league.

The Cumberland squad was - Dion Barnes, Ray Sempill (both Penrith); Greg Mitchell (Gillford Park and Reds reserves); Scott Macrae (Mirehouse and Reds U18s) - Mathew Charters, Liam Jackson, Dan McDermott, Ryan Moody, Callum Lee, Adam Maine, Nick Holden, Shane Rooney, Stefan Scott, Aaron Roberts, Gareth Brunton (all Workington Under-18’s).
