East Riding FA (Hull) U18  3  Cumberland FA U18  1

The Cumberland FA team made their longest trip of the season, some four hours plus, to take on their Yorkshire opponents East Riding FA (Hull).

The East Riding side had beaten Westmorland in their last game and Cumberland were looking to restore some pride for Cumbria.

In what was an entertaining game East Riding took the lead against the run of play with a goal that resulted from a triple mix up of players.

The end result was an East Riding goal from a shot into a empty net from 35 yards.

Cumberland got on top in the 10 minutes before half time but could just not find the net past the excellent East Riding keeper.

In the second half Cumberland came out all guns blazing with Nick Holden being put through on goal but was tackled from behind on the edge of the box.

The East Riding centre half was lucky to stay on the pitch as he was the last man.

The resulting free kick was a training ground move where Callum Lee feinted the right footer and Gareth Brunton buried the ball in the back of the net with his left foot.

Now all square IT looked as if there would be only one winner which was Cumberland.

How wrong that assumption was as East Riding picked themselves up and scored with 15 minutes to go from a free shot on the edge of the box.

Cumberland pressed for the equaliser but in the last seconds of the game East Riding broke away and were awarded a penalty which they converted.

Cumberland can only look back and think that this game was there for the winning.

On the positive side is that all of the Cumberland players were a year younger than their East Riding opponents

Cumberland squad -  Mathew Charters, Dion Barnes, Greg Mitchell, Ryan Moody, Liam  Jackson (capt), Callum Lee, Adam Maine, Gareth Brunton, Dan McDermott, Nick Holden, Aaron Roberts, Shane Rooney, Ray Sempill, Scott Macrae.
