FORMER Manchester United star Lee Sharpe is coming to west Cumbria in a fund-raising event for cancer research.
Sharpe is to be the guest speaker at an Indian banquet held in the Whitehaven Amateurs club on Friday, July 24. Two local singers will also be performing on what promises to be an entertaining night.
Whitehaven chairman Bill Robson said: “I’m afraid the subject of cancer has been mentioned too often in our club. One of our players was suffering from testicular cancer last year and now the daughter of our former manager John George is having treatment for the disease.
“We felt we wanted to do something to raise both awareness and funds so are putting on this special night at the club.”
Tickets are £25 and are limited to just 85 and anyone interested should contact Bill on 07894471957.
Whitehaven have appointed former Workington Reds winger Martin Harris as manager in succession to George, who is obviously wanting to spend more time with his family this year.
The Amateurs start their pre-season programme next Wednesday with a home game against the Reds.
They will also play Penrith at home on July 29 and then travel to Rossendale on Saturday, August 1 before the season proper in the Northern League gets underway on August 8.
The Amateurs have been handed a home tie in the second qualifying round of the FA Vase on September 19 when they will entertain Cheadle Town.
If they get through that another home tie awaits on Octpober 3 with Congletown Town the opposition.
