Whitehaven came from two goals down to beat a much improved Washington side that included new signing John Sherlock from top of the league team Sunderland RCA.
It was Sherlock who had the clue to putting his side ahead with a deflected shot which wrongfooted visiting 'keeper Brian Miller.
Then leading scorer Peter Watling doubled his sides advantage with another cruel deflection on 21 minutes and Whitehaven could be forgiven for thinking it wasn't going to be their day.
To be fair, they had been as much in the game as their hosts, without much luck in front of goal, but Stuart Shaw grabbed the all important first goal on 28 minutes, and Craig Robson followed that with a right footed strike to bring the sides level.
Shaw then scored a quite spectacular goal just before the break to put Whitehaven in front 3-2 in a topsy turvey half.
Robson gathered the ball near his own goal-line and sent a pass to Kevin Connelly. He found Mally Holliday who sent Darren Donald away on the right, and his pinpoint cross found Shaw arriving at the back post to slot the ball home.
The second half was fairly even in terms of possession, but Whitehaven did have chances to extend their advantage, but were thwarted by good goalkeeping and some no nonsense defending.
The visitors backline of Craig Lewis, Adam Johnson, Graeme Lilly and Kevin Law picked off most of Washington's attacking moves, and Miller looked confident behind his defenders as the hosts seemed to tire in the final quarter of the match.
All in all an excellent result after the weather had interrupted recent fixtures, and Whitehaven now face Northallerton Town at home on Saturday 19th December, kick off 3pm.
Team: Miller, Lewis, Johnson, Lilly, Law, McGrady, Donald, Holliday, Shaw, Connelly, Robson. Subs: Dustin (70mins) G.Hewitt, Hodgson.
