THERE’S a more symmetrical look to the Workington and District Sunday League this coming season with eight teams in each of three Divisions.
Due to early season drop-outs the Premier Division finished with seven; the First Division had eight and the Second Division still had nine teams left.
Well since then four teams have gone with the biggest shock surrounding the resignation of Cup kings Portland.
Also gone are Moorclose, the Oval Centre and Miners Arms Broughton Moor.
But there are new teams to take their place, and bringing the League strength to 24.
Flimby, Captain Nelson Tavern, Red House and Salterbeck will be new in the League for 2008/09.
So, too, are Miners Arms Workington even though there was a team under that name last season. The old Miners Arms team will now be called Red House Athletic.
And just to confuse things even more last season’s Red House Senhouse are simply to be called Senhouse Street this time round.
In a further name switch the Curwen Arms are to be called FC 32.
The season gets underway on Sunday, August 17 although there isn’t a full programme.
The opening matches are: Premier Division – Bounty v Bluebell.
Division One – Vine Bar v Borough; Grasslot Welfare v The Well; Crosby v William Hill; FC 32 v Senhouse Street.
Division Two – Flimby v Letters Inn; Glasson Rangers v Captain Nelson Tavern; Salterbeck v Seaton VPH.
This year the referee’s fees have gone up from £20 to £22.
