NETHERHALL bagged their third trophy of the season in the Tesco Cumberland County League, but needed a penalty shoot-out to beat Frizington White Star.

The Maryport club had already clinched the Premier Division title and the Crest Teamwear Conway Cup before Wednesday night’s clash at Borough Park in the ISS Waterers Peter Dawson Benevolent Cup.

In some ways this was the one they wanted most as the trophy was named after popular club official Peter Dawson who died tragically early last year.

Sponsors ISS Waterers have said that in future the competition shall be simply called the Peter Dawson Benevolent Cup.

The final went into extra-time, and then penalties, as a result of an 89th minute equaliser for Frizington White Star by Barry Armfield after Chris Dawes had earlier given Netherhall the lead.

The eventual hero for Netherhall was Ross Johnston who took over from veteran Tom Shepherd between the posts and made the one save in the penalty shoot-out which ensured the trophy went to Maryport.

All the other penalties went home so sudden death wasn’t needed and Netherhall had taken their third trophy 5-4 on spot kicks.

It was a second disappointment in four days for White Star who had surrendered a 4-1 lead to Cleator Moor Celtic on Monday, before losing 7-4 in the final of the AP and J Brown Builders Divisional Cup.

They can still gain some consolation if they can pip Celtic to the First Division title in the remaining games, and they also take-on Aspatria back at Borough Park on Saturday in the final of the CFM Radio Whitehaven Cup.

As for Netherhall, they aren’t finished and can add more silverware to the trophy cabinet as they are still standing in the semi-final of the Focsa Ken Glover Memorial Shield.
