The Tesco Cumberland County League kicks off on Saturday with a full league programme but last Saturday saw the annual curtain raiser to the season.
Premier Division champions Netherhall and Whitehaven Cup Winners Longtown contested the Charity Shield sponsored by the Keswick Launch Company.
Champions Netherhall made most of the running as Longtown, although playing at home failed to turn up for most of the game.
Netherhall's Dave Towers had a few good chances before he finally fired his side in front on the stroke of half time.
Longtown did rally but it was nothing to trouble Stuart Pettit in the Netherhall goal as Jack Kirkbride and Ross Johnston, on his debut, handled everything Longtown had to offer.
Then with only seven minutes left Shaun Smith doubled the lead and four minutes later Gary Pearson made it three as Netherhall ensured they would lift the Charity Shield.
County League vice chairman and Press Officer Herbert Briggs said the main winners was the chosen Charity as the clubs raised £85 on the day.
With Graham Lamont, John Mulligan and Scott Henry, the officials on the day, all donating the match fees and expenses to the charity and the sponsors money it means that McMillan Nurses will benefit to the sum of £250.
Longtown will hope for better when Mirehouse visit on Saturday but Netherhall host Wigton Harriers and it will be an anxious wait for bosses Billy Gilmour and Jimmy Irving as the Charity Shield could prove costly with Ben Byers, Nick Holden and Chris Dawes all picking up injuries.
