Kendal Town earned a clash with Blue Square North promotion hopefuls Southport after they beat Marine tonight 3-2 in the Lancashire Co-op Cup.
It was a bit handier than the scoreline suggests from Parkside, but Marine only scored their second goal in the third minute of stoppage time.
Manager Lee Ashcroft was looking for a more up-beat performance from his side after a largely lethargic display in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Matlock.
The Cumbrians went ahead on 21 minutes through Gary Baker when he got on the end of a good pass from Carl Osman top rifle home the opener.
It did not take the visitors long to get level and it was ace marksman Peter Cumiskey who was on target with a smart finish into the bottom corner. Cumiskey has a ha-trick to his name against Kendal back in 2007.
Just before half-time Kendal regained the lead when the Marine keeper Sean Lake – like Cumiskey formerly with Blue Square North outfit Vauxhall Motors - couldn’t hold a shot from Lee Mulvaney and Craig Hobson smashed in the rebound.
There wasn’t a lot to excite the home crowd in the second-half and it looked destined to finish 2-1 until two late goals changed the score-line but not the result.
Alex Taylor, celebrating his return from injury, fired in a shot which squeezed under the sprawling Lake to find the net.
Marine skipper Kevin Lynch bundled home his side’s second from short range in the 93rd minute but the final whistle came soon afterwards.
