WORKINGTON Reds 2013 Fund has crashed through the £40,000 barrier with a donation of £3,000 from a supporter.

The fan wishes to remain anonymous but the generous donation moves Reds nearer to the halfway mark in their initial objective.

The 2013 Fund was launched on February 18 at Borough Park where Reds fans heard chairman Humphrey Dobie and commercial manager Les Smallwood outline the plans in place to bring a new stand project to fruition.

When an initial £100,000 is raised the stand project would receive an additional £150,000 from grants and matched funding.

The Reds would then have to raise a further £500,000 which would be matched to allow the new stand project to be fully funded.

It’s all geared-up to be up and functioning by 2013 and the latest donation has come as a welcome boost.

Smallwood said: “First of all it has to be said that this is a very generous donation from a supporter of the Reds. It puts us over the £40,000 mark inside five months.

“The new stand project is very much alive and in the next few weeks we will be looking to form a special 2013 Fund committee, meeting monthly to pool ideas and introduce schemes to bolster the fund-raising activities.”

The new stand, built similar to the Hinckley United model, would fit within the existing footprint and will include new larger changing rooms, officials’ lounges, entertainment rooms and function suites would be built within a mezzanine in the stand.
