WORKINGTON Reds midfielder Anthony Wright (pictured) has ended the season as he spent an earlier part of it – on crutches.
Wright has suffered another fracture in his foot but is hoping the problem can be resolved during the summer.
He broke a bone in his foot in the early part of the season and was side-lined for six weeks.
When he came back the promising left-sided player took another knock on the foot, although this was not confirmed as a second beak.
However, when he was taken-off last Tuesday after feeling a problem with his foot, a hospital examination showed that he had suffered a fracture.
“They are not absolutely sure whether it’s in the same spot as the first time I did it. I have to go back and there’s a possibility that I may have a pin put in.
“The good thing from my point of view is that we have finished the season and I have all the summer to get myself right again for the start of next season,” said Wright.
Manager Darren Edmondson has told his players that they will be back in to start training for the 2008/09 season on June 28.
He’s hoping that three players who have been plagued by injuries during this current season – Wright, Dave Hewson and Michael Reed will be fit and firing by then.
“Those are three good players in our squad and they have missed a lot of football during the season. To get them fully fit and on their game next time round will be a massive bonus,” said Edmondson.
The manager was pleased with his side’s final performance of the season, a 1-1 draw at Harrogate which meant the Reds finished 14th in the table.
The club’s reserves can provide some silverware for the Borough Park boardroom with two big games over the next week.
Tonight they entertain Fleetwood in what is virtually a Lancashire League Western Division title decider.
Reds lost down there 3-0 last week – their first defeat in the League this season – but if they gain revenge tonight it will give them the title. It is Workington’s last game and they are three points clear of a Fleetwood side who still have to play at home to Leigh on Wednesday.
Workington have such a superior goal difference that a draw tonight would assure them of the crown even if Fleetwood beat Leigh.
Then on Saturday the young reserves host Farsley Celtic in the final of the Lancashire League Cup, being played at Borough Park (3pm).
