Workington Reds boss Darren Edmondson is waiting for a call from Keswick youngster, Steven Hindmarch who has just been released by Carlisle Utd.
But Edmondson is not expecting a favourable call as he fully believes the talented teenager will accept the offer of a 12-month deal with Shrewsbury Town.
Edmondson, currently on an FA coaching course, said: “I’ve spoken with Steven and was hoping that he would join us for pre-season training and see how things went. But he told me about the chance to link-up with Paul Simpson at Shrewsbury and I fully expect hom to go there.
“But he has told me that he will contact me and let me know his decision.”
There was a general sense of surprise that Hindmarch – who played against Reds in the 2007 Cumberland Cup final at Brunton Park – had been released by the Blues.
He was starting his career at Brunton Park when Simpson was in charge so the former United boss knows all about his potential.
Edmondson has set June 28 as the date for the start of pre-season training and hopes to include some new faces in the squad, although the new Reds budget – being prepared by the board – will set the tone on recruitment.
There have been rumours of retirements and departures, but so far there has been no movement in or out of Borough Park.
“I think in our League it’s a quiet time. Managers do their homework, ask about players and speak to them, but footballers usually give themselves as long as possible to make up their minds just to see what comes along,” said Edmondson.
Although he’s on the course for two weeks Edmondson will be back in Workington on Friday night for the club’s presentation night at the Waverley Hotel – and has made it compulsory for his players.
