WORKINGTON Reds are rated a 33/1 shot to win the Blue Square North title next season.
Bookies Blue Square have come-up with the odds for the 2009/10 championship and can’t decide on who should be clear favourites.
They have gone 6/1 all three – AFC Telford, Alfreton Town and big-spending Fleetwood Town who have signed the Barrow pair of Steve McNulty and Nick Rogan.
Relegated Northwich Victoria, who will start with a ten-point penalty for going into administration are rated at 14/1 to overcome that handicap and land the title.
The newcomers moving-up the English pyramid system are also preferred to Reds in the betting. Eastwood Town are best at 14/1; Ilkeston Town are quoted at 22/1 along with Corby Town and long-distance travellers Gloucester City are at 28/1.
Farsley Celtic, like Reds, are rated at 33/1 and the only clubs quoted at longer odds are Stafford, Solihull, Hyde and Redditch who are all priced at 50/1.
Other prices are as follows: Southport 7/1; Droylsden 11/1; Stalybridge Celtic 11/1; Gainsborough Trinity 12/1; Harrogate Town 14/1; Vauxhall Motors 25/1; Hinckley Utd 25/1; Blyth Spartans 28/1.
The 30th AGM and Presentation Evening of the Football Conference took place at the Holiday Inn, Stratford-upon-Avon with Reds represented by director Colin Doorbar and secretary Steve Durham.
It was confirmed Blue Square were entering their final twelve months of a three year sponsorship whilst troubled Setanta entered their third of a five year deal hoping for better news on their future soon.
The formation of the three leagues was ratified with Reds set to play Northwich Victoria, Eastwood Town, Ilkeston Town, Corby Town and Gloucester City – the latter three for the first time – in Blue Square North this term.
It was an all Cumbrian affair at the presentation/dinner dance with Reds seated with a nine-strong Barrow contingent including former Workington player Neil McDonald.
Tamworth’s Gary Mills was named BSN Manager-of-the-Year while Gateshead’s Lee Novak won the Player-of-the-Year and Top Scorer award. Southport won the Fair Play award with Reds collecting a cheque for £800 for a third place finish in the disciplinary stakes.
Gateshead’s match day programme was voted the best in BSN.
The fixtures for the 2009-10 season will be released in the next fortnight with Reds hoping for an away game on the opening day August 8 to avoid a clash with Carlisle United’s League One opener against Brentford.
It is possible that Blyth Spartans will be Reds’ opponents for the Christmas/New Year fixtures.
The Setanta Shield first round draw was due to take place on Monday however, following Friday’s news regarding the future of Setanta, the draw has been suspended until further notice.
The draws for the early rounds of the FA competitions will be made on 1st July when Reds will learn who they will play in the FA Youth Cup.
