stewards_cup_goodwood.jpgWORKINGTON Reds can pocket over £2,000 if the David Barron-trained Hitchens wins the prestigious Stewards Cup at Goodwood on Saturday.

The Borough Park club has been allocated Hitchens in Saturday’s six furlong sprint showpiece on Saturday which will be screened live on Channel Four.

To commemorate Blue Square’s new three year deal to sponsor the league it has created a prize fund for clubs centred around this showpiece race.

Each club in the Blue Square BET Premier, North and South has been allocated a horse in the race.

Whichever horse wins that club will receive a cheque for £2,000 plus an additional amount determined by a £100 bet on that horse. So for example if Reds’ Hitchens wins at its current 25/1 price that would yield another £2,5000 for them.

The random draw took place at the Blue Square offices in London and the horses/clubs are as follows:

On Thursday, 29th July – the first 28 horses that intend to run (in handicap order) will be declared for the race – meaning 40 clubs will be eliminated at this stage.

The final 28 clubs will receive additional details about their horse on Thursday afternoon.

The Stewards Cup is one of the big betting Handicap races held on the final day of the Glorious Goodwood Festival. It is run over six challenging furlongs and is open to both thoroughbred colts and fillies aged three years or older. The race always attracts a large field of runners.

The race dates back to the 1830’s, but was first run as an independent Stewards Cup in 1840. It carries a very valuable prize and is currently sponsored by Blue Square Bookmakers.

Horses trained by Roger Charlton have usually run well in this race, in fact he has had three recent winners, including Genki, who won the race last year with odds of 14/1.

The race has never been a good one for favourites, indeed only four favourites or joint favourites have won the race in the last 25 years., although the last one to do so was Zidane, trained by James Fanshawe, at 6/1 in 2007.

Reds, meanwhile continue their build-up to the new season tonight when they host Blue Square Premier new boys Darlington at Borough Park with the kick-off brouight forward to 7pm.

Phil McCluckie, Gari Rowntree and Gareth Arnison, who all missed Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Whitley Bay and last Tuesdaty’s 3-2 defeat at Penrith, are expected to play after returning from holiday.
