Borough ParkWorkington Reds boss Darren Edmondson is being asked to make cuts at the Blue Square North club.

It will either mean players being chopped from the squad or across the board pay cuts.

The board decision followed Tuesday night’s FA Cup heartache when the Reds went down after a penalty shoot-out at Harrogate.

As the credit crunch bites in all areas of life in Britain, non-League football is no exception. Reds, like a lot more clubs, are having to look at all aspects of their finances - both on and off the field.

The Workington directors were desperate to pocket the £4,500 cheque as second qualifying round winners, which would have given them the opportunity of earning another £7,500 at Eastwood this week-end.

Last season Workington went through three rounds of the FA Cup before going out at Bury in the first round proper.  The £18,750 they earned from three Cup victories was vital cash in the battle to stay financially sound.

The same three victories this season would have earned Reds £24,500 as the prize money has been increased by sponsors E-ON.

Reds budget has also been hit by the non-arrival of the £10,000 cheque from Necastle Blue Star which is still oustanding for the compensation when they took manager Tommy Cassidy last season. Reds are still actively pursuing that one.

The players will find out about the cuts when they attend Tuesday night’s training session.

There’s no Blue Square North fixture this week-end, through being out of the FA Cup and despite attempts to bring forward a League fixture, no-one was prepared to do that.

Workington have drawn their last four games 0-0 (two of them in the FA Cup) and are unbeaten in their last three League games, currently standing 14th in the table.
