WITH nine of the next 12 Blue Square North games at home, Workington Reds need to shape-up at Borough Park.
Manager Darren Edmondson believes his faltering side has to cut through the apparent added pressure of playing at home and deliver.
Most of the best performances this season have been on the road and last night’s 1-0 defeat to Harrogate at Borough Park only added to the statistic.
“It was the same last week in the FA Trophy against Braintree in the replay after we had done well down at their place.
“I think, perhaps, we are naïve in some areas. We have a number of young players in the team but they have to stand-up and be counted.
“Harrogate was always going to be a tough game, because they have some experienced players, but again sloppy defending has cost us.
“There’s also a concern that we aren’t making the opposition goalkeeper work enough and that was again the case last night.
“That doesn’t happen so much when we are playing away from home where teams tend to come at us and we have the pace on the break to worry them,” said Edmondson.
Workington travel to Nuneaton on Saturday – where they have already drawn 0-0 in the FA Trophy. Their first win of the season was at home to
Borough in the League and they also won the Trophy replay.
But that’s followed by three successive home games – a pattern of one away, three at home which is repeated through until Easter Saturday (March 22).
Because of the amount of travelling Workington have had in January – an estimated 2,000 miles – they will travelling on Friday night to Nuneaton and staying en-route.
Friday night’s planned Lancashire League game at Borough Park against Darwen has already been called-off. With Reds due to entertain Barrow next Tuesday in the Blue Square North derby, the pitch has been given extra time to recover after last night’s clash.
