Cumbrian golfer Gary Lockerbie has just completed his best pay-day of the year after finishing equal ninth in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, writes our special correspondent.

The Championship was played out over three links courses - Kingsbarn, Carnoustie and two rounds at the Old Course, St. Andrews.

The Penrith golfer shot 69, 71, 67 and a final round of 68 to pull in approximately 70,000 euros which should ensure he keeps his card for another year as well as gaining a place in the 'Race for Dubai' competition.

Lockerbie finished on – 13 which was seven shots behind Yorkshire's Simon Dyson who claimed the biggest win of his career by taking the title.

Dyson made six birdies in the first seven holes and never looked back, cruising to victory on – 20 over fellow Ryder Cup hopefuls Oliver Wilson and Rory McIlroy.

The massive £485,850 cheque catapulted the winner into the lead in the standings for next year's European team at Celtic Manor, and into the world's top-50 for the first time.

His closing round of 66 was far too good for his rivals after starting the delayed final round just one shot off the lead held by Luke Donald, who never got going and slumped to a one-over 73 to finish six back.
