THE weather has again played havoc with the hound trailing programme and Thursday’s meeting at Bridekirk was cancelled.
They raced there on Tuesday when the weather was atrocious. Torrential rain turned the field into a lake in parts and although all three trails were completed the decision was taken to call-off the follow-up meeting.
Tuesday’s scheduled meeting will be at Dean even though there were suggestions it should be switched to Winscales.
But although Lowick Show itself has been cancelled, the trails will go ahead as advertised. Thanks to the many generous donations (to compensate for the lack of Show funding), the trails on Saturday will each carry £50 prize money, and there will also be a puppy show.
Sunday’s Loweswater Show will operate on similar lines – no Show but the trails will go ahead as arranged.
Ennerdale Show went ahead as planned last Wednesday and the four trails attracted over 70 runners.
Dairy One and Westgate Ruby had a good battle in the seniors, with wither one of them having the opportunity but it was the 2006 champion who prevailed by two lengths in the end.
Razzmatazz led all the way down in the pups and went on to beat Westgate Lark by four lengths.
The open maidens went to Reuben by three lengths from Snowdrop while Highwayman beat Waltzing Matilda by a similar distance in the open restricted.
Habana picked-up an important win at Lowick to stretch her lead in the title race. Huntsman’s Dazzler was the runner-up but the kennel had better luck in the open restricted where Huntsman’s Chance beat Dairy Dancer.
Langdale Trooper had opened proceedings by beating Clayton in the senior trail.
On Thursday they were at Wythop and in the senior trail Westgate Kyza held on nicely to hold-off the challenge of Ms Dynamite in a field of ten runners.
Darling was seen coming down the fell with the lead in the pups but nearer home in-form Levi asserted and won well from My Girl and the fading Darling.
There was a big field of 32 for the open restricted but a clear winner. Jodie had got away from her field and won by a distance from Huntsman's Charm and Waltzing Matilda.
On Saturday senior title challenger Mayfair could only manage third at Crag Farm where Westgate Ruby had 100 yards to spare over Hot Fuss.
In the pups Georgie's Girl finished well to beat Ellie Vee by two lengths and in the open restricted four times champion Melody showed she still has her love for the sport as she raced home a distance clear of Newtown Ghost.
Also on Saturday at Sandale there was a good race between Alfresco and Cracking Thore in the seniors with the Kendal bitch getting there eventually by two lengths.
Coming off the fell Misty had looked to be in charge but seemed to take a wrong turning and didn’t figure at the business end.
The maidens went to Perfection by a couple of lengths from High Patrol but there were no entries for the puppy maidens and that was cancelled.
In the pups Cracking That led Levi by about three yards coming over the final gate as the pair had pulled well clear. But it was Levi who finished the better and got up to win by a length.
On Sunday at Shap the senior trail was shorter than expected, with the speedy Huntsman's Chance reportedly setting a blistering pace outside.
Westgate Kyza led her in the closing stages and kept the advantage down the finish, winning by ten lengths, and they were well clear of the rest.
Brad the Lad looked as if he had the maiden trail sewn up, but he turned round on the finish and let Lazonby Lad and Eden River past before he righted himself. All three were close at the line.
Huntsman's Dazzler was the very easy winner of the puppy trail, with Beyonce leading in the chasing group.
Relentless came away on the finish to beat Fell Dancer and Jim Dandy comfortably in the open non-winners. Margaret Baxter took the picture alongside of (left to right) John Grisedale with Relentless; Mick Moorehead with Fell Dancer and Ollie Fielden with Jim Dandy.
Cracking Mischief took the competitive open restricted trail from Huntsman's Charm and Jodie in a good finish for all the tickets.
They were back at Lowick on Monday but Wednesday’s senior winner Langdale Trooper1 could only finish fourth this time as Howgill Sandy rook the major honours.
Habana couldn’t add to her tally as she could finish only second to Huntsman's Dazzler, who was reversing the previous result.
Huntsman's Ruler completed a kennel double by winning the open restricted from another of the team, Huntsman's Charm.
They were also racing at Frizington on Monday and in the seniors there was a terrific finish with Hot Fuss and Dignity neck and neck all along the finish. In the end Hot Fuss got the verdict by half a length.
She had to make up a lot of ground but Bluebird (pictured in action above and with one of the owners below) hasn’t given up on the puppy title as she raced home in the junior trail, some ten lengths clear of Newtown Ghost.
Mal Walker took the two shots of Bluebird and any of his prints can be bought at £25 for a A4 framed and £40 for a A3 framed. Prints only are £10 A4 and £15 A3.
South Cumbrian raider Sunlight was successful for Geoff and Barbara Jones in the open maidens, beating Night Shadow by a length.
On Tuesday the weather was atrocious for the trails at Bridekirk, and as a result the meeting tonight over the same venue has been cancelled.
Torrential rain turned the field into a lake in parts and although all three trails were completed the decision was taken to call-off the follow-up meeting.
In the seniors two of the title contenders were in the field of nine and Mayfair just got up to pip Westgate Kyza by a head.
Levi is in good form at the moment and scored again in the pups, holding on to deny Dairy Song and Cracking That.
There was also a good finish to the open restricted involving two of the season’s leading veterans in which Clarity beat Outrageous by half a length.
