THE practice trials are starting to build momentum as we rapidly approach the official March trials.
One or two pups are starting to show a bit of potential, but as the old saying goes there’s many a slip twixt cup and lip.
Owners an trainers will just want to get them well schooled, running confidently and fit for the championship season when it opens on Thursday, April 1.
Thanks to Lynn Pawley and Jayne Petersen for the low-down on recent practice trails which will keep enthusiasts informed about who is running where and how they are getting on.
Several open trials were held at the weekend and Brian Rowlandson’s True Blue (Dairy One – Clarity) put in a couple of promising performances.
On Saturday at Lamplugh, the Cleator Moor-based dog hound finished well to overhaul Ian and Shauna Donaldson’s Angel (Fleetwood Mac – Lady Ryans) in the closing stages and went on to win in a time of 13.48 by the margin of a few lengths. The Rush, Ward, McCracken and Mossop’s Sawdust (Calzaghe – Paris) was third of the twelve runners and these three had pulled away from their rivals.
Twenty four hours later at Buttermere, the youngster again showed a good turn of foot on the finish, drawing clear on the run to the line to win by twenty yards.
It was close for all the other placings but Alan Conchie, Nicola Cameron and Tania Hetherington’s Altanic (Dairy Knight – Nikki) and Edward and Lisa Crosby’s trio of littermates by Dairy One out of Regularity, namely Fortitude, Temperence and Warden were all up with the pace. There were ten runners and the time was 10.03.
Lynn Pawley, Martin Burrow, Donald Hodgson and Ronnie Bell’s charges were first, second and third in the ten strong senior trail. Desire beat Dempsey in a time of 8.44 and they had pulled clear of Della.
John Grisedale and Heidi Messenger achieved a similar feat in the senior trail at Lamplugh. Their two year old, Matador just beat kennel mate Relentless in a very close race with Jack and Rhona Watson’s Westend Bond not too far adrift in third place of the 22 runners. The time was 12.25.
The second trail at the Soot Box on Saturday was a repeat win in both trails by the same hounds.
Nick, Trish and Yvonne Wilson’s and Steph Stainton’s Tiagress won the pups comfortably from a fast finishing Lady Louise owned by Les Tyson with Bingham/Owens Sierra Sue in third.
The senior trail was a close finish with last week’s winner Petersen/Oldcorn’s Cavendish narrowly taking the honours by a short head from Saunders, Appleby and Pounder’s Dizzee Rascal. Yvonne Wilson’s Toytown was n third.
Brenda and Donna Bingham and Vicky Owens were proud owners of the winning puppy on Sunday with Sierra Sue taking the spoils. She battled her way around on her own after the leading two came up the short pup start, and she was the only one to finish.
The senior trail again was dominated by the Bland/Barrow partnership with Jenny Bland’s Jenny’s Dream taking the win from kennel mate Huntsman’s Charm with Liz and Charlotte Stobbart’s Gifted in third.
The short puppy trail was won by Wilson/Stainton’s partners Tiagress with Dot and Ronnie Walkers Border River in second and Bingham, Petersen and Oldcorn’s Wreckless Wren in third.
A short senior trail saw was won by Appleby and Pounder’s Dizzee Rascal, comfortably from Bowderdale Billy and Lady Louise.
