THE dinosaur syndrome is over and the Hound Trailing Association has embraced change.
That isn’t a derogatory use of the extinct reptiles but more an indication that everyone connected with the sport is now ready to try and take the sport forward – and more importantly accepts the need for change.
I’ve been described as a dinosaur myself for my view that the Super Stadium in Workington should be a non-starter but even though I’ve got my bus pass I don’t consider myself to be out-dated. I know there has to be change to benefit the sports clubs in Workington – it just so happens I don’t believe that was the right way to go.
I hope people in the hound trailing community, labelled dinosaurs, can be a bit more thick-skinned on that matter and take an active role in suggesting ways to breathe new life into the flagging sport which has provided so much enjoyment to many over the years.
New ideas are still possible from old minds and now that the sport, across the spectrum it seems, looks united surely progress can be made.
All this pre-amble is in relation to Sunday’s HTA annual meeting at Hundith Hill after which chairman Barry Laidler was up-beat. He believes that some sound ideas are already being prepared for discussion.
Two of the topics which have been consistently touted figured in motions when it was agreed that a fixture committee should be formed with one representative from each Area to arrange the forthcoming fixtures.
Also, the meeting was in favour of the Executive Committee forming a working sub-committee to look into reducing the number of areas from it’s current number of seven.
The new chairman said: “It was pointed-out that it is actually in the rule book that the executive can talk about reducing areas at any time.
“At our next committee meeting the Executive will get down to forming a sub committee who can look at the various options regarding the areas an how best people can co-operate.
“The same will apply over the fixtures although I can assure people that it will not dictate. The committee will meet after the monthly Area meetings, discuss the planned fixtures and perhaps tweak on or two where it is felt they would be better placed.
“One of the main problems is that we have too many venues which are becoming over-used and we do need new venues or, where possible, old ones revived.”
The following new rules were passed:
No hound levy to be charged for Shepherds' Meets, and time limits at these to be 15 - 30 minutes.
A hound or puppy on having its registration cancelled for interference must be sterilised at the owner's expense.
No more than 1 trail meeting to be held on any week-day in October.
Entries for All-In trails to be £2.
No towels or rags of any description to be waved at the finish of trails.
Established agricultural and horticultural shows to have a clear day.
As expected there was a good attendance for Sunday’s annual meeting with 164 members present and they produced plenty of lively discussion.
Michael Huddart presented the balance sheet and for the first time since 2005 it was shown that the HTA had made a profit. He hoped this trend could be continued.
He then went on to present the trophies while Ian Bell presented the Junior Club prizes.
Billy Towers, one of the members who had expressed his feelings in print via a letter top the Whitehaven News, was invited to speak.
He said afterwards: “I was happy with the way the meeting went and maybe people are now all starting to realise we are going to have to do something.
“I think a start has been made and it might take two or three more years but at least change seems to have been grasped.
“We only have 100 pups this year; only 13 bitches have been lined for next year’s pups to come out of and the venues are fast disappearing. We have to do something.
“The fact that w had our best turn-out for years says something and personally I think it was a very good meeting.”
All he senior officials were e-elected – Barry Laidler (chairman); Geoff Irving (vice chairman) and Margaret Baxter (secretary/treasurer). A long-serving former chairman Roy Laidler was confirmed as an Honorary Member.
Now courtesy of Lynn Pawley some information on some of the trials that hve been getting back into business following the spell of bad weather.
Open trials were held at Dearham, last week to raise money for the Cockermouth area Cash for Points competition.
On Tuesday in the puppy trail, Neil Brown and Colin Graham’s Bingo (Sycamore – Liam’s Lady) moved up from second place on the whistles to beat the Bland and Barrow’s Huntsman’s Future by a few yards after the last named had made a mistake jumping the last gutter.
Laura Steele & Gordon Tinnion’s Quiet Lass (Quiet Lane – Quiet Pearl) was third of the 16 runners and the time was 7.10.
The Pawley, Burrow, Hodgson and Bell’s Desire repeated her senior success at Shap when triumphing after a good battle with Neil Brown’s Meregill. Della was third of the 37 runners and the time was 7.00.
On Thursday, the puppy trail produced an exciting finish, with several hounds holding winning chances as they appeared on the finish.
It was Laura Steele and Gordon Tinnion’s pair Quiet Goldfinch and Quiet Lass that came to the fore, with the first named just getting the verdict over its litter sister by about a length. The duo, are bred by Quiet Lane out of Quiet Pearl. Alan Blacklock’s Blackbird (Mambo – Busy Time) was third of the 15 runners and the time was 6.59.
Their four year old, Quiet Lane then completed a family double when triumphing in the 26 strong senior trail by ten yards ahead of the Pawley, Burrow, Hodgson and Bell’s Della and Reg Smith and Alf McCarron’s Alliance. The winner recorded a time of 6.54, just five seconds faster than the juniors.
HTA bookmaker, Paul Garritty has set the odds for the 2010 Senior Championship and is taking bets all-in or without three.

Now, as promised last week, a look at the dog pups who will be lining-up in the HTA this coming season.
Champion trainer Victor Brownlee hasn’t a pup running this year but daughter Christine has registered Momentum who is a son of ex-champion Dairy One when lined with Clarity.
The familiar prefixes – M for a Brownlee of course – are in abundance again. Quiet Bullfinch runs for Laura Steele and Gordon Tinnion; Langdale Flicker for George Birkett; three Foxparkes – Robert, Timothy and William – are under the care of the Napiers; Jimmy Glaister has Westgate Caesar and Bill Mellon has Cracking Sunset.
Fleetwood Mac (9), Dairy One (8), Hill Breeze (5), Brad the Lad (4), Some Man (4), Dairy Knight (4), Calzaghe (4), Mambo (3), Sycamore (3), Shane (2), Mountain Mist (2), Jimmy Quick (1), Watt Nut Another (1) and Quiet Lane (1) are responsible for siring the 51 dog pup.
There are only 46 registered for the Produce Stakes.
Angel, a winner for the Donaldson’s at Coniston had travelled from Hensingham and is by Fleetwood Mac out of Lady Ryan’’s.
Her sister Ooh-La-La was also prominent at Shap for the Dawson/Swanton partnership.
Five other bitches out of that litter are all kennelled in west Cumbria – Lady Anna Ryan’s, Larry’s Lass, Medwyn, Ryan’s Lady Anna and Sky Dancer.
I’m sure the bookies will love the fact that we might have a Ryan’s Lady Anna running against a Lady Anna Ryan’s?
Fleetwood Mac, who was a quick pup in his day, as also responsible for a single bitch when lined with Toffee Girl. Toffee Deluxe has stayed with Danny McCluskey and Sheila Metcalf at Plumbland.
Dairy One and Some Man have both proved popular sires and they have 14 bitches running for them in 2010 – with ten of them by the former champion Dairy One.
Two were the result of Dairy One’s mating with Clarity, two of which stay at Rosthwaite with Stan and Carole Jackson – Colleen and Connie. A third bitch Little Boots has gone to Settle and the long-distance enthusiast Mike Moorehead.
Dairy One was also lined with the former veteran champion Bretton. One stays with Brian Graham at Bassenthwaite (Tagget) while Miss Idaho and Miss Montana are now at Arlecdon with Glenis and Raymond Farren and their grand-daughter Georgia Naylor.
Some Man produced two bitches from his mating with the Napier’s Pocahontas and both Foxparke Giddyup and Foxparke Pocahontas stay at Coulderton.
Nemesis and Nike were from the lining with Hollywood and Joe and Vanessa Simpson kept both. Nemesis has already shown she has the hang of things by winning at Shap.
The Calzaghe/Paris combination has been responsible for two bitches which stay in west Cumbria and could be worth keeping an eye on.
Martin Rush and partners have Sawdust while the Dobson family have Sky’ the Limit.
We’ll also have two more Westgate bitches running for Jimmy Glaister at Bewaldeth.
Westgate Gypsy is out of Westgate Lark by Watt Nut Another while Westgate Music is out of Liam’s Lady by Sycamore.
Quiet is another prefix which is becoming familiar to trail-goers and there are two new bitches to grace the scene in 2010 – Quiet Goldfinch and Quiet Lass are by Quiet Lane out of Quiet Pearl – two more which could be quite interesting.
There is just one non-Produce dog – Limerick, by River Tyne out of Hot Response who will be running for the Greenhows and Ken Cole of Windermere.

The picture (above) was taken at the Aspatria and Wigton Area presentation and shows a cheque being handed over to the Air Ambulance fund.
Farmer Willie Gill (left) and long-serving Area official Dickie Smithson (right) are with Jan Hawkins, who was representing the Air Ambulance.
The cheque was for £440, earned from two trails at Snow Hill and a third at Sandale when the Border Association handed back half the profits to the Area.
