Bid to oppose Lillyhall landfill legalities PDF Print E-mail

lillyhall_landfill.jpgRadiation Free Lakeland are inviting members of the public to join them in opposing radioactive waste in Cumbrian landfill.

The Environmental Law Foundation has been supportive in providing an initial consultation with top lawyers Irwin Mitchell who have indicated that there may well be a legal case to be made with respect to the Lillyhall site.

Lillyhall is receiving radioactive asbestos from Scotland, bagged up in skip lorries.

The existing planning consents  for Lillyhall are specific to composting and "inert"  material processing.

There were no objections at the time of the original consent for the landfill but there was no mention of radioactive asbestos being tumble tipped into the boundary of the same landfill that sells compost.

To take the legal case any further Radiation Free Lakeland (who receive no funding/grants and ask for no donations)  would either need the assistance of someone eligible for legal aid ( or a very rich benefactor).

Meanwhile they will be at Staveley Carnival on 11th July and Bowness on 14th July with copies of the following letter available for people to sign.

To Cumbria County Council

– KEEKLE HEAD RADIOACTIVE LANDFILL SITE -

Dear Cumbria County Council,

The nuclear industry is being dangerously deregulated – one of the deregulations is to allow radioactive waste into landfill.

I am writing to oppose the proposal to site 1 million cubic metres of radioactive wastes at Keekle Head near Whitehaven.

This former open cast coal mine is the source of the river Keekle recently featured on BBC Countryfile as being one of the best salmon rivers in the Lakes  "worth £60m to the Cumbrian economy.

The landfill site at Lillyhall, near Workington  is already (illegally?) accepting large volumes of radioactive asbestos in skips from Scotland’s Chapel Cross nuclear plant.

Scotland's updated radioactive waste policy – is near site, near surface !

Please stick to your resolution to oppose the damaging Keekle Head proposal.
