packhorse_bloom.jpgBRITAIN in Bloom judges Martyn Hind and Jim Goodwin have praise the enthusiasm shown by Keswick in Bloom volunteers in helping to keep the town spick and span.

The judges picked a rainy morning for their inspection of Keswick on Tuesday. The town is one of the seven finalists in the small towns section of the national competition.

Mr Hind said: “We feel a bit sorry for Keswick who have worked hard and wanted to show the town at its very best, but while it’s always nice to have sun the weather doesn’t affect our views. Someone said to us as we were going round that, if you don’t garden in the rain in Keswick then you don’t garden and that seemed very appropriate.”

Mr Goodwin told the Keswick Reminder: “We have seven towns to judge in this section and we have done five up to now. It’s a pleasure doing the judging because you get to see places you would not otherwise see. I am looking forward to coming back to Keswick and having a trip on the lake and climbing one of the fells.”

He said: “You meet so many people with different ideas and there are some tremendous volunteers. It’s not all about what local authorities do. Our remit is much wider than that.”

The judges met local scouts and brownies on their tour of the town along with several individual gardeners as well as members of the Keswick in Bloom team while the Town Mayor Martin Pugmire was also at several of the judging venues.

Mr Hind said: “We have enjoyed our visit and it’s good to see such great enthusiasm.”

Keswick in Bloom’s Elizabeth Barraclough said: “There has been a lot of frantic scraping of weeds off pavements. We showed the judges Crosthwaite Gardens where we had the winning garden last year. Since then it has been absolutely under water during the floods, but it’s up and looking marvellous again.”

The judges were pleased to see what had been done with the reclaimed area of land at the junction of Main Street with Tithebarn Street.

Ms Barraclough said: “I think the the judges enjoyed the tour and they have been very kind. We now have to wait until 29th September when myself, Maysie McCambridge and Winifred Curzon will be going to the finals ceremony in Birmingham.”

Mr Pugmire said: “Keswick owes a tremendous debt to the volunteers of Keswick in Bloom who make a lovely town even more gorgeous.”
