Bosses at Glasgow Airport are launching a summer invasion of northern England with the hope of convincing people there to fly from Glasgow.
The campaign will centre on Carlisle, from where thousands of families travel south to Manchester every summer to catch a holiday flight.
It will stress that Glasgow is closer and offers cheaper holiday packages during the peak summer months.
The Scots say it is hoped the initiative will provide a much-needed boost for the Renfrewshire economy.
Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, is spearheading the campaign, which will also promote the recent £31million makeover at Scotland’s busiest international gateway.
Glasgow Airport bosses claim English holidaymakers can typically save hundreds of pounds on a family holiday if they head north to jet out in August and September.
That’s because the school term in Scotland and England differs, with kids here returning to classes much earlier than their counterparts south of the border.
Ms McMillan said: “With cheaper holidays, cheaper parking and a shorter journey time from Carlisle, it makes financial sense to fly from Glasgow Airport.
“With around 90 destinations worldwide available from here, canny Cumbrians will be surprised how far their budget takes them.”
Airport managers plan to target travel agents in the Cumbria area in a bid to encourage them to book holidays through Glasgow Airport.
They have also produced a summer flight guide which highlights the range of destinations available.
