RACEHORSE trainer Steve Gollings has successfully climbed Blencathra in the Lake District to raise funds for the Lancashire-based Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre.
He ascended the fell tops – appropriately nicknamed 'Saddleback' by walkers – north east of Keswick despite poor weather conditions.
"I was cold, wet and alone," Gollings said. "A feeling of isolation and vulnerability swept through me. I was scared but, after a very tiring and frightening climb, I eventually reached the summit.
"To raise cash for the TRC gives me immense pleasure. Times are hard for everyone, and the TRC is in need of our help. It does a fine job in looking after former racehorses in need.
"Many types of cases are encountered from the retired to, sadly, the neglected, abandoned and abused. The TRC aims to rehabilitate and ultimately to re-home as many horses as it can."
The TRC, based at Halton in Lancashire, was founded by Carrie Humble MBE 18 years ago and is Europe's original charity for the rehabilitation of racehorses.
Gollings (pictured right) has so far received just over £1,000.
Cheques can be made out to the 'Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre' and sent to his stables at Highfield House, Scamblesby, Lincolnshire LN11 9XT.
