tree_planting[1]An invitation has gone out to be part of autumn’s stunning golden hues in a tree planting mission to boost precious woodlands.

Hundreds of oak saplings will be introduced to Whinlatter’s Masmill Forest over three special days and volunteers are needed to help out.

A Bassenthwaite Reflections’ project to extend native woodland, the young trees will provide a raft of far reaching benefits for the countryside, wildlife and carbon control.

Project leader, Rachel Graham, explained: “We hope as many people as possible will join us on October 31 and November 11 and 18. A really meaningful experience is guaranteed. After all, it’s impossible to under-estimate the value of oaks!

“They stabilise soil - which ultimately helps in our goal to improve water quality in Bassenthwaite Lake - play host to a spectacular variety of wildlife, generate oxygen and store carbon.

“Heritage Lottery Fund backed Reflections is all about getting the community involved in looking after our lake and landscape.

“The campaign to restore native woodlands has seen many amazing gatherings where people of all ages and abilities have cleared areas at Masmill and planted oaks. The goodwill and keenness to do something worthwhile has been wonderful. But the task is far from over and we need more support.”

Old friends and new faces will be warmly welcomed at the three planting days. No experience or tools are necessary, just a willingness to muck in. Action kicks off at 10am and runs through until 3pm. Packed lunches and suitable clothes are needed.
