Lindeth Fell, at Bowness on Windermere has been named among the ten best hotels in the country.
According to the latest Good Hotel Guide there were ten outstanding hotels which claimed the 2008 Cesar awards named after famous hotelier Cesar Ritz.
Lindeth Fell won the section for English country hotel while the Bay Horse, Ulverston was named Cumbrian inn of the year.
Owners Patrick and Diana Kennedy will have been running the Lindeth Fell for 25 years in 2009. They bought it after Patrick retired from the RAF.
Diana and the hotel manager Linda Hartill were on their way to London today for the awards’ ceremony tonight.
The owners’ daughter Sheena said: “We have been mentioned in the Good Hotel Guide on a number of occasions but being named in the top ten was out of the blue.
“It is an independent guide, and you don’t pay to be included, so earning a title like this one is extra satisfying.”
The hotel’s website says: “Lindeth Fell Country House Hotel is a charming character hotel built in 1907 with historic roots.
The hotel retains an atmosphere and style of a gentleman's residence with well-proportioned drawing rooms, stylish furnishings, original paintings and water-colours and a generous supply of books and field magazines for guests to enjoy.
“Lindeth Fell is just one mile south of the centre of Bowness on the A5074, the Lyth Valley road, and just two miles from Windermere railway station.
“We can also arrange car and taxi hire for guests on request. Why not relax and enjoy tea or cocktails on spring and summer days on our wide terrace on the west side of the house, which has superb views across to Lake Windermere.
“The hotel has ample relaxation space, including comfortable lounges and the oak-panelled hall is available for use by guests at all times. Guests can enjoy superb modern English cooking in our Lake view restaurant and we have an extensive wine cellar. Morning coffee, afternoon tea and packed lunches available on request.
“Lindeth Fell places emphasis on personal attention for our guests, in stylish surroundings with English country house cooking at its best. A dispense bar operates at all reasonable hours in the hotel, and is supported by an extensive wine cellar.”

The views of editors Desmond Balmer and Adam Raphael came in the introduction to the 2009 edition of The Good Hotel Guide. They also attacked the Government for cutting the budget of tourist organisation VisitBritain and were also critical of Tourism Minister Margaret Hodge.
The editors said: "After the dreadful summer, the last thing hoteliers needed was to be told by Ms Hodge that they were too expensive and of worrying quality.
"The Government should be looking at ways of promoting hotels rather than attacking them. British hotels pay one of the highest rates of VAT in Europe, more than three times the level of those in France."
