skiddaw_hotel.jpgONE of Keswick’s longest running traditions, the Old Folks’ Do, found a new venue this week when the 137 year old event was held at the Skiddaw Hotel.

The party has taken place in three venues since the 1950s. The Royal Oak Hotel hosted it until 1988 when the Keswick Hotel took over. Now the Skiddaw is to continue the tradition.

Skiddaw Hotel Manager Kevin Curran said: "We were only too pleased to step in. In fact this is the third time I have served at an Old Folk's Do. My first was at the Royal Oak Hotel, the first year I moved to Keswick 27 years ago.

“I was also on hand at one event at the Keswick Hotel when I worked there. I am beginning to think they are following me round."

The oldest gent and lady were given a gift and cut the cake. The oldest lady was 91-year-old Nancy Arnett, who moved to Keswick from Guisborough three years ago. Oldest man present was 96 year old Ted Rutland.

Maysie McCambridge was this year’s president, but admitted it was the first time she had been to the “Do” which attracted over 70 guests She said: "We are so lucky to live in an area like Keswick where everybody looks after each other."

The event is organised by Keswick Lions and Keswick Rotary Club. Money for the event comes from a variety of sources, including the Hound Trailing Association, who donate the money raised at one of their events each year.
