Despite the recession West Cumbria Motorclub has had a very busy year with members taking part, or organising events, writes WHEELSPIN.
Chairman Russell Grant has given this résumé for Getnoticedonline.co.uk of the 2009 activities.
“In January we held the first Auto test, involving 12 cars, and then the M Sport clothing sale all at the Sheep n Wool Centre Cockermouth.
“Pearl does a great job finding all the clothing and this year (as last) Willie Jarman did a fantastic job of auctioning the clothes.
“February brought the second 12 car event and the awards night when the venue was changed to The Waverley Hotel, Workington when I think all went well.
“The overall club champion was Willie Jarman while the ladies champion was Nicola Smith.
“March brought the Malcolm Wilson Rally when most of the club members were involved, either helping to marshal, organising specific tasks or just competing, so it was a very busy time for the club.
“Next up was the A.G.M. where the committee was elected for the next year, followed by the last 12 car for the early part of the year.
“April hosted the club’s first trip out to the Brewery at Hesket Newmarket. This turned out to be a great night out, organised by Mitch McGrath.
“Following this was the first round of our P & R Benn Auto Solo Challenge. Last year (2008) we held an Auto Solo (our first) in September and going on from that Andy Barnard was able to obtain some sponsorship to hold a three- event challenge in 2009. So thanks again to P & R Benn.
“May and June was all about Auto tests. The first, at Threlkeld Leys had 17 entrants while June was by kind permission of Sam Steel’s uncle Sam when nine entrants took part.
“July started with our day at Distington Vintage Rally. This usually brings out a good selection of club cars etc., followed by the second round of the P & R Benn Auto Solo challenge while sandwiched in between was our single venue forest event The Greystoke Stages.
“This event is going from strength to strength and I feel sure that not many club members are not present on the day. The organising committee are doing a great job and I myself wish them continued success.
” August got us back to the Auto tests with the first one at Willie Jarman’s field, Branthwaite when there were 12 entrants.
“The Yottenfews Auto test unfortunately had to be cancelled due to a mix up at B.N.F.L. and unfortunately EMMU Rescue Unit had to postpone their demonstration until December.
“September brought The Motorsport Week-end which entails an Auto Test on the Saturday afternoon; a 12 car at night and the third and last Auto Solo Challenge on the Sunday.
“This really is a long hard week-end but I think everyone enjoyed it. The Grass Auto Test at Threlkeld Leys was organised by Ryan Winthrop, Dave (Mitch) Mitchinson with 13 crews taking part.
“Yours truly (Russell Grant) organised the 12 car which attracted 10 entries which was an excellent turn out.
“The Auto Solo always starts very early on Sunday, but results man Wilson Irving is there early as usual, with the rest of us following on.
“We had 26 entries for this event, nearly a full entry and on another great sunny day. Well done to Andy Barnard for organising and all who helped over the motor sport week-end.
“October brought about our own club quiz. Mike Kenyon and Rodger Fisher organised the questions while Sam and Kerryl organised pie and pea supper at the pub in Lorton. Thirty members turned out to what was a great night.
“Next was Sam and Kerryl’s 12 car to finish the month off.
“November started with a trip to Cockermouth Mountain Rescue with 16 members turning out. It proved an excellent night so well done Ryan.
The following events:- a 12 car + Auto Test were cancelled due to the horrific flooding and damage to many bridges , roads, etc.
“December brought along the club’s Christmas Party and EMMU had agreed to come along. It was another fine night with chips and sandwiches to finish off with.
“Just after Christmas Ryan organised the Fun Auto Test at The Sheep and Wool Centre, always good fun. I must thank the Sheep and Wool Manager and staff for all they have done for us in the past year. It’s nice to be able to use the car park etc.
“So as you can see for a small run Motorclub we do a lot over the twelve month's, and everything we are organising next year is already up on our web site, wcmcrallying.co.uk so have a look and you might see something you like.
“As Chairman I would like to thank all the committee members who run these events throughout the year, and if you fancy joining our motorclub please get in touch, as always everything is on the web site.”
