ROAD RUNNING
ONE of Britain’s classic road races, the Derwentwater Ten, celebrates its 50th anniversary this Sunday.
Around 500 runners from all over the UK will be in Keswick to take part in the event.
The 10 mile race round the lake has been held continuously since 1960 and many previous winners will be attending including the legendary Ron Hill, winner in 1963 and still competing aged over 70. He will be wearing the number 1 on his vest for the occasion, not the 108 he wore alongside.
Organised by Keswick Athletic Club, the Derwentwater Ten is sponsored by Mizuno athletic shoe Co. in association with Pete Bland Sports of Kendal.
The race will start in the Market Square at 12 noon an the course runs down the Borrowdale road, crosses Grange bridge, along the flank of Catbells, through Portinscale to finish at Keswick School.
A bonus of £200 will be paid to the winner if the course record of 49min 15sec. is beaten. This was set by Keswick athlete Kenny Stuart in 1986.
In recent years, runners have been close to the record. Stephen Hepples from Redcar has missed it by one minute and Andi Jones of Salford by only 23 seconds.
Rebecca Robinson running for Kendal Athletic Club has been first lady for the last four years. As a medallist in the recent Commonwealth Championships, Rebecca is poised to better the ladies’ Derwentwater record of 56min 59sec set in 1986 by Lorna Irving running for Edinburgh.
The Grant Horsburgh Trophy in memory of the local popular all-round sportsman, is awarded to the first Keswick Athletic Club member to finish, and is currently held by Matthew Fraser.
