Candian-rung pigeon had flown from Arbroath PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 13 August 2008

WE’VE solved the mystery of the Canadian-rung pigeon which dropped in at a Flimby loft last week.

The bird was bred in Canada but had only flown from Scotland where it was sent as a squeaker.

Derwent Valley Federation secretary Cyril Ostle said: “I never believed for one minute it had flown from Canada but it’s nice to find-out the whole story.

“Apparently it was among a batch of young birds which had been bought by a fancier called Ian McKinney from Arbroath. He had to keep them in quarantine for quite a while so when he did release them they had become quite strong on the wing.

“He was training the bird to start racing when it disappeared – and ended up in my loft at Flimby.

“The interesting thing is that Ian’s nephew lives in High Harrington and he had seen the story on getnoticedonline.co.uk last week so he rang and told his uncle.”

Cyril has been invited to keep the Canadian bird and says: “It will have a home here as long as I’ve got a loft of pigeons but I won’t be trying to race it.”

Still on the subject of oddly-rung racers Alan Parker has got a young bird in his Seaton loft with an old ring on - 91V81894. Alan thinks it may be a local young bird. It is a dark chequer but it's proving difficult to find-out the owner. Anyone who can shed any light on the bird should ring Alan on 0190062840.

The Derwent Valley Federation raced from Appleton last week and were held over because of the bad weather across the country.
They were liberated at 8-30am and the winners were back in the Workington area around 10-35.
