THE Derwent Valley Federation raced from Garstang on Saturday, waiting for a mid afternoon liberation.

But the West Cumberland Federation decided to bring their birds back from the same race-point.

Conditions had deteriorated when they arrived after deciding to mark the birds on Saturday morning before travelling down.

It was the second week in a row that the West Cumberland had not raced because of weather conditions and they now face going into a first race from nearly 70 miles at Leyland this week-end.

The Derwent Valley birds were dispatched at 2-10pm into a fresh west wind and the leaders were homing into Harrington at 3-50pm.

Fanciers appear to have had mixed fortunes - some lofts faring poorly but others having decent returns.

The Derwent Valley birds are also due at Leyland on Saturday, but for them it will be their third race while the West Cumberland will be just setting-off.
